You are right that the masks are beneficial in preventing the spread of infectious disease and airborne illnesses but the benefit of doing so while walking around in public is fairly minimal, it's more in intimate settings like home that the masks see the most demonstrated prevention of spreading something like the flu, and it is important to remember that this benefit is not for the wearer of the mask but for those they live with

Also consider that if people wore the masks exclusively for that reason they would not do so all the time, like many in Japan and China now do - you are overstating the altruism of the general public, most people wouldn't do something purely for the benefit of others around them. Most people who wear them believe that the masks carry some benefit for the wearer, either in terms of pollution or personal health benefits
