What's the difference in consciousness between an animal and a human in a vegetative state?
dogs are more conscious than humans in non-vegetative states, quite clearly

Animals don't have a consciousness because they are not aware of themselves, only their environment. As for a human in a vegetative state, I don't know for certain, but I imagine they are either dreaming, or the much more hellish option, they are fully aware of where they are and what's happening, but cannot interact with others in anyway.

Nonhuman animals, while not possessing sentience or sapience, still react to environmental stimuli, are able hunt or forage to feed themselves and instinctually engage in behaviours to improve their Darwinian fitness.
Whereas a human in persistent vegetative state is just a slab of barely living meat, nourished only by machines and would die without extreme medical intervention
