confirmation bias my friend. Up here in the north west the trend is outspoken and confidant, they want a manly man, but mid east where my brother is they seek reserved and sentimental.

in fairness a truly shy person would shoulder most of the work on the female and most aren't keen running the relationship like that.
As for what might be causing the trend in your area it could be that shy can equate to not being a blowhard which say you live in Boston I'm sure girls there would see a guy not going alpha male ego stroking try hard 24/7 as "shy"
