I didn't watch anime for over 10 years before I decided to get into it. I started by watching animes from my childhood which I had nostalgia for, Dragonball and Dragonball z.

Next I watched Death Note, which for me opened my eyes about what anime really is.

Now I just search for top quality anime which I personally have a large interest in the subject . I don't watch many but the ones I do watch I always enjoy. That's the great thing about anime, there is so much that there will always be something for you.

I started watching a month or so ago. Haven't watched 3D shit since. Saw some Naruto and DBZ as a kid and hated it so I always avoided anime, but in a loss of self depricating depression i decided to seek some out. Watched Evangelion because that seemed to be the most popular among non-autist people. It become clear really quickly that anime isn't a genre, and there's something for everybody.

Though finding new shows is such a pain in the ass. I end up clicking around endlessly until something looks decent and then trying to find a decent torrent. Then pray the torrent is watchable. Nothing is simple with this shit

If you try starting with "classic" anime (which is really just heavily westernised stuff), or Ghibli, or a mainstream shonen, you risk losing interest before you get to normal anime, or you might fall into the trap of only sticking to those shows. A light action, light ecchi harem anime such as The Familiar of Zero. It has a Rie Kugimiya tsundere, so it's a gentle introduction to that kind of fetish character archetype. A nice all-round anime.

Bakemonogatari. It is one of the more accessible shows by Studio Shaft but still has all the pretentiousness and edgy minimalist visuals. Denpa Onna Seishun Otoko also a good option with autistic waifu.

K-On or any of the other cute girls doing music shows. You may or may not end up getting into the music. But worth a try.

Haruhi Suzumiya. A classic.
