Talk to Veterans. I had to help out at a Hospice when I had to do community service and alot of the WW2 Veterans would open up about the shit they saw. I even had a former german soldier who served on the Eastern front who said he literally ate his own shit one time after the war when he was hiding from Russians in some woods east of Berlin and found his way to the American/British side after a winter hiding in the woods.
