iktf anon, though not quite on the same scale

>constant debt, paying off credit cards every month
>never impossible, debt maxed at around $2k, but combined depression and apathy made it feel hopeless
>finally decided to start saving on shitty part time job
>go from $2k in the red to $3k saved, so much money for emergencies that I don't feel nervous at every bill
>as time goes on stop spending money on frivolous things almost entirely
>$27k saved up over 2.5 years
>won't even replace 4 year old phone with destroyed screen and constant shutdowns
>because it would mean the numbers would go down instead of up

Yea, I know this too... it's a bit like some game where you have levels and streaks, don't wanna fuck up that nice score.

You guys getting good interest?

>nice score

I'm also nervous that I'll start spending it like I used to, like it was the last dollar I'll ever see, so I might as well get the shit I want. It feels like every cent I spend now is just taking me farther away from "financial stability", but I don't even have the ability to define what that means to me.

I'm getting something like 1% due to a promotion for the next few months. What do you want to do with the money you save?
>>
>>34895818
If you already have enough for a rainy day fund, you should be investing a lot. For example, I've made about 15% return on my money since last year (I only have a few thousand but still) using one of those algorithmic investment services. If your money is just sitting in the bank you're losing money

I guess I've had this little thing in my head for some years now about having enough to live off the interests (and some, to account for inflation, which is probably the point where I'd say financial stability is reached). I would like a little cottage in the middle of nowhere with some land belonging to it, maybe 100 hectares of forest or so, I'd try to make it as self-sustainable as possible. Generate own electricity, grow and cook my own food, maybe even keep some livestock, hunt and fish, chop wood etc. I'd spend the days doing the things I like, maybe travel a few times a year, car projects, catch up with all vidya, books, animu, piano, nipponese etc.

Is the bank giving you 1%? Not bad if so, here the interests are so low it's basically nil. I've had Visa stocks for 6 months or so now, I think it's been a 20% gain or so, need to hit up the brokerage page to check.

Care to explain how this works in detail pls, Senpai?

Don't let go of that feeling anon. Embrace it. Chase it. It's better to have something to live for.

The bank is, yeah. It's some Ally savings account that I kept getting offers for, so I took it. If I had $40k they'd have given me $500 for putting it with them, but I didn't have enough to qualify for it. It goes back to 0.0001% in a few months.

That sounds really comfy anon, I hope you get enough to live your dream.

HOW DO I INVEST MONEY?
I only need $1000 a month to survive comfortably and I take home 2000 a month. What do I do so that I can retire at 40?

I've calculated I need ~$800,000 to survive for 40 years without working (leaving some room for rainy days). I doubt I'll live past 70 anyway
>>
>>34896538
Are you expecting to get significant raises as time goes on in that company? Do you have any upward progression? Doing it on $24k net is pretty hard.

Assuming best case scenario that you're 20

>$12k/yr over 20 years is $240k
>needing a return of over 300% assuming you're starting from zero over 20 years

I don't know anything about investing, but it will 100% be an income problem if you're looking to retire that early
>>
>>34896538

Unfortunately nearly all investments come with some risk. As with most gamble the higher the yield the higher the risks. Stock market is bearish right now, so if you want you can pick some of the big companies or some index fund and you're pretty safe to get some % over a year. If the electricity prices go up buying a share in a wind turbine will probably give you a relatively safe 13% in a year or so.

Some time ago there was a guy on /biz/ (check that place out btw, it won't help you much in decision making but it highlights a lot of investments) some time ago, nagged his parents to lend him 1/3rd of their life savings and he had managed to squander nearly all of it on bitcoins, thread was hilarious, dunno if he killed himself, got kicked out of the house or whatever afterwards.

Yes I was sort of implying I don't have 1k worth of guns already
but yeah if my account gets down to 1k it's time to rethink those plans

If you have over $10k in your bank account you're doing it wrong.

Buy VTSAX.

I know literally nothing about investing beyond "Vanguard index funds are good". Can I easily pull this money out? Is it easy to invest in an index fund? Where would I even start?

You can buy and sell any time (during trading hours, typically working weeks 9-4).
Just get a brokerage acct, etrade or whatever, they're free, altho they charge a small fee for every trade you make, deposit some money into it and get going.

That's how most of the Jews escaped the Nazis during WW2, tho, by trading their Jew gold and silver. Also after the economy recovers you can just sell it again.

Basically it's just a company that invests your money for you. They charge a percentage fee for balances over a certain amount. There is wealthfront and betterment. I use wealth front because someone gave me an invite that gave me a higher limit without fees. It's basically zero effort on your part

I don't know where to start. By the time I'd even have a bachleors I'd be 32, and I get that's better than not having it, but are places even looking to hire someone in their 30's with zero job experience when there's plenty of people in their 20's with better academic records?

>>34896959
Where do you even find a job for that? Is there a school that sets you up after you've graduated?
>>
I've saved up like $6k and my parents keep trying to convince me to go on a trip to New York or London or somewhere (having friends and family to stay at in those places). I like to fantasize about going somewhere and having a trip that is very transformative, as normies always seem to have. I know it'll never happen though, because I like the possibility of it happening much more than actually wanting to do it, and having to leave my comfort zone in the process.

I've gotten better, but I always used to get mad whenever I spent my money - I could've got that game or hoodie cheaper somewhere else. I think that's a big part of being a robot, waiting for something to happen and not having the "JUST DO IT BRAH" mentality of our peers that allowed them to have those formative romances and friendships and wild party experiences. Because it would (most likely) go bad, its more enjoyable to savor that 'what if?' scenario where it goes really well. Maybe that's why at lot of robots are compelled to save.
