it's the skin being stretched to it's limit in a short space of time, so it has to rapidly grow some extra skin to accomodate

you can be fat and not have stretch marks, if you slowly raised your weight over a long period of time, rather than rapidly (like I did)

I had a huge growth spurt during my puberty, and I also gained lots of overweight at the same time, so now I have stretch marks all over my body. They're not as bad as they were when they were fresh, but they're still visible. They're not deep and crackly like in OPs pic, but they're still there.

I lost about 30 kg of overweight few years ago and now my stretch marks are barely visible anymore. Sure they can be seen from certain angle with certain lighting, but for most part they're invisible.

Thank god they're only surface marks and not like in OPs pic, that shit looks like Freddy Krueger's skin.

The only factor in acquiring stretchmarks like this is the rate at which the skin has been stretched.

You can have two 300lb women, one riddled with fissure-like stretchmarks on her stomach and one with baby-smooth skin. The difference would be that the scarred woman gained her weight in a very short amount of time, whereas the other one gained the weight gradually.
