And if you live in Japan and make a dedicated effort, in just 1 year, I guarantee you that you will be thinking in [semi-basic] Japanese. You will be quick enough on your feet to respond to people naturally and say almost anything you want to say.

What does fluent mean? Sure, you won't be at N1 proficiency after a year. You aren't gonna take a college level class in Japanese after studying Japanese for a few years. But, you don't need to do that for 99% of interactions. And if you live in Japan you WILL get better over time if you make even a slight effort.

The difficulty of Japanese for English speakers is greatly overblown. The grammar is fairly simple and the pronunciation is positively piss easy. Now reading and writing, that's where the difficulty comes in and yeah, memorizing the kanji and god forbid having to hand write them is pretty tough. But as far as being able to speak it and understand it when spoken? Not that hard. Certainly nowhere near the hardest language for an English speaker. Languages with rich systems of noun declension will be the hardest to learn for an English speaker purely on a production and comprehension level. Go try to learn Finnish or Polish and then come talk to me about how bad Japanese is.
