it's the worst because you can't just attach a picture of your shit for easy replies. your writing has to be spectacular to get any responses, and even then you prolly won't get any.
give me a sample, phamallama.
I'm a communication designer so I do pretty much everything, just not really good. Every project is something different but I learn fast enough luckily.
I do webdesign/logodesign/animation/film/interactive installations and I started a videogame company out of the blue with a friend so now I'm researching the visual side of that super hard. Gonna upload a few things.
Pic related is my graduation project about non-places in urban environments. tl;dr non-places are the result of the cyclical event where building new stuff takes visitors away from old stuff which then withers and is seen as dirty without reason. Said installation gave people the chance to voice their opinion on why these places are born and how they should be treated by urban planners.
>>34802421
God I hate this feel.
>give me a sample, phamallama.
I'll try and write something on the spot:
Rocco Backer was as real as taxes. Smartest guy I knew too, could dress up bullshit and so well you'd want to take it to the dance. He was smart, he was handsome, had a body carved from wood, and all the girls called him "Rocco horsecocko."
All of this sounds like the guy might be some kind of enigma, right? Some bullshit fairy tale I'm making up, but unfortunately for 95 percent of all desperate and horny males, Rocco Backer was a real human being, as much as we all didn't like that. He was hard to dislike too. If there was a merciful God in heaven, he'd have given Rocco a shitty personality to go along with his adonis features, but I guess that's why I'm an atheist. You can't NOT like the guy. He's magnetic. Always on the hunt for some way to please you, always back-slappingingly happy to see you, always sincere in every motion of his body and flick of his tongue. I swear he's the perfect human being. That's why he had to die.

>>34802878
No, this was for a design museum who wanted to show student work at the time, but they decided they wanted to let people play with cheap 3d printers instead so this never got shown.
Previous one was presented in one of the non-places I found in a city for a few weeks, funded by the city because it addressed an issue they are fighting.

Trying to get into drawing and digital painting for real after hobbying it for a while but I have real trouble with how to effectively study. I put in hours but just that takes me nowhere really. Debating going to fzdschool for a year but my age and current working situation make that problematic.
>>34802603
>>34802654
Yeah I thought that one was good haha.
>>34802916
Actually no. I like to write weird science fiction. Not the slap-bang space opera type, but the type where people are trapped in paintings (but they don't know it), hunted by doppelgangers, given strange and mysterious artifacts with bizarre effects. I've been published once before, in a lit mag.
What about you? What do you write, anon?

>>34803048
oh cool, what lit mag? i really like those kind of slipstream scifi stories; it's hard thinking of a good twist that goes beyond a punchline though. i've tried writing a few of those kinds of stories but they were never any good.
i'm split between writing robot (as in r9k robot) themed lit fic and also some other fantasy/scifi stuff. there's a handful of fantasy and sci fi worlds i've had in my head for a long time but working on the stories and characters just makes me feel too lonely to work on it.
>>34803352
My college's lit mag. Nothing special. I got in because I won my college's writing contest. They gave me a plaque and $500 dollarydoos for winning, on top of publication in the lit mag
>it's hard thinking of a good twist that goes beyond a punchline though. i've tried writing a few of those kinds of stories but they were never any good.
Oh I know. It feels like when I write these, they're centered around a good twist/punchline at the end. It feels forced. I've turned to essay writing and creative nonfiction lately. Well, fictional essays from fictional characters.
I read too much Lovecraft.
>i'm split between writing robot (as in r9k robot) themed lit fic and also some other fantasy/scifi stuff. there's a handful of fantasy and sci fi worlds i've had in my head for a long time but working on the stories and characters just makes me feel too lonely to work on it.
some of my favorite books have been written by weirdos/robots. As far as fantasy/scifi goes? You want my advice? Make it something never been done before. There's a billion nerds with complex fantasy realms in their head, and they all run together. You gotta do something to step away from the crowd. And this is coming from a hack who like to write scifi.

well, being published is being published. and you get to feel good about yourself since you won an award/contest. i submitted a story for a contest and felt bad when i (inevitably) lost. is your college in aussieland or you mean dollarydoos generically?
are your works online somewhere? i'd like to read some of that.
>I read too much Lovecraft.
honestly, the recent times i've read his stuff i feel somewhat unimpressed. i think his imagination is great and all but the storytelling is kinda same-y. someone recommended ligotti as a modern example of lovecraftian horror but i still feel like i'm missing something, like maybe i'm not reading it right.
i'm not concerned so much about the originality, i know that they're different enough where as long as execution is good it'll be fine. i'm writing them stylistically more like lit fic anyway. when i was much younger and i first started thinking of these worlds, i constructed them with the express purpose of being different than the usual fare, as meme-y as that sounds. but at this point i just can't work with characters without feeling cripplingly lonely.
heres another old painting
>>34800341

Shit, I'm sorry man.
>is your college in aussieland or you mean dollarydoos generically?
Nah, I'm a burger. I was just using dollarydoos for shits and gigs
>are your works online somewhere? i'd like to read some of that.
They ARE, but my real name and everything is attached to them, and so I really don't wanna dox myself. I'm sorry.
> i think his imagination is great and all but the storytelling is kinda same-y.
This is very true. I LOVE his ideas, but it's always some inconceivable cosmic horror that gets brought to light by a Miskatonic professor.
> someone recommended ligotti as a modern example of lovecraftian horror but i still feel like i'm missing something, like maybe i'm not reading it right.
I've never read Ligotti desu. I've read August Derelith, who was a companion to Lovecraft, but otherwise I just spent time reading classic scifi.
> i'm writing them stylistically more like lit fic anyway. when i was much younger and i first started thinking of these worlds, i constructed them with the express purpose of being different than the usual fare, as meme-y as that sounds. but at this point i just can't work with characters without feeling cripplingly lonely.

>I used to world build extensively
i have heard of it, and yeah i used to do it a lot too, and i still do it from time to time as a guilty pleasure. ultimately, i had to tell myself that there's no point unless it gets turned into a story or some kind of narrative work. there's no point in autistic descriptions of interesting details when all it's gonna be is a buncha notes in notebooks and on computer docs that no one will ever read. i'd rather spend that amount of autistic energy into actual writing so that i can get better.
keep this thread originally alive

Nope, Colorado.
> ultimately, i had to tell myself that there's no point unless it gets turned into a story or some kind of narrative work
This is why I made it a point to write short stories. I struggle finishing things, but found that if I give myself a limit, I can finish stuff, and turn out something I'd want to read
>i'd rather spend that amount of autistic energy into actual writing so that i can get better.

>>34806146
yes it oregano is
I write shitty scripts for short films and sketches.
I've tried writing longer stuff but I just end up procrastinating by writing smaller stuff instead.
Then I hoard them on my hard drive and do absolutely nothing with them aside from occasionally posting them on 4chan.
I finished the first draft of this one this morning. Key points that I need to fix up in the second draft would be the various grammatical and formatting errors, seeing about condensing some of these descriptions and making it more snappy as well as working out if the final line works as a punchline or if I need to improve it.
The punchline is meant to be based around this anime fan being so divorced from reality that he sees no issue with spending five years learning Japanese just to read more pornography. Whether I accomplished that, I can't tell when it's this fresh and I'm "high" on accomplishing a first draft.

hear is my official sonic teh hedgehog fan characters
his name is uncle hedgehog, and he is sonci the hedgehog's uncle (his other ucnle, not uncle chuck). He was the one twho taught sonic how to be a man when the woodland creatures were living under the repression of the evil eggman. Long before the reign of eggman, Uncle Hedgehog was the aparagon of wild and untamed masculinity, who swung from tree to tree gathering food and tending to his flock. Hehad coupled with all of the women in knothole village at one point or another, such was the strenght of his primordial alpha chadness, and though many sought them for himself, or got pregnant with child through his many acts of hot sweaty lovemaking, none could pin him down. For unlce hedgehog was meant to be free like a bird, and nobody could cage him, and they all knew attempting to do so was pointless.
He was a legenddary figure until one day the evil Doctor Eggman poisoned him, causing him to fall into an eternal slumber under the great world tree. But legend says that one day, when mobius is under greateest danger, Uncle hedgehog will awaken to fight side by side his nephew Soncis.

Thanks. The idea was to create a Dungeons and Dragons module from start to finish, with minimal editing required,in the hopes it would get bought and published that much easier. The dragon was a feature encounter:a Hitman for the local evil fire temple, and he replaced his cut off claw with a Swiss army knifes worth of detachable weaponry. No one has yet to do a Captain Hook dragon,to my knowledge, and I will use the concept in some other work.

dialogue is good but to be honest, i think the punchline is weak (e.g. so obsessed with anime that studying niprunes for years for porn is not an issue) on its own. i think you did accomplish that punchline clearly but the script doesn't go beyond 'haha look at this loser otaku.' to be fair, i can't really tell if it would fall flat unless this were acted out in a youtube short or something.

For those who want to make comics, but lack drawing talent, consider this screenshot from Second Life. I made a collection of Goblin avatars that were ripe for turning into a comic strip,so you can do something similar and add word ballons and special effects as needed. Tons of freebie props and poses out there, and griefer free sandboxes to build your sets and scenes. Plenty of webcomics already doing this out there,so why not you?

>i think you did accomplish that punchline clearly but the script doesn't go beyond 'haha look at this loser otaku.'
I never intended to go anything beyond that (well apart from also commenting on the ridiculous set-ups you often come across in hentai). Even though the otaku is the prat in the sketch, it's mainly based on an exaggeration of myself. Writing out my own weeb tendencies and elitism to have fun with them.
As a short, self-contained comedic sketch, it's setting out what I intended to do but if it being solely based on "look at this dumb otaku" hurts it, I should fix that up in subsequent drafts.
The punchline would work better acted but looking at it again, I can see that it's not a strong ending for a self-contained story. It's better as the ending for a scene in a longer story where the otaku's character would be explored more.
Setting up the friend as an opposing elitist but as a western comics fan could make for better conflict in a self-contained sketch but that would mean a complete rewrite and to go in a completely different direction than I originally intended.
Thanks for the feedback, you've given me some good food for thought.
I'll write down these notes, sit on this one for a month and then come back to it with a fresh perspective and see how I can make it stronger.
>>34807761
Thank you.
It's made up but I've read quite a few doujins and fapfictions based on getting injected or bitten and the new chemicals making them unbelievably horny. It's great.

I have a lot more work and practice ahead of me before I get to the point where I'm ready to do something with them. That's why I post them on /r9k/. Your feedback made me notice a similar flaw in one of my other scripts that I wrote. Something about it was seeming off to me but what you were saying about not being anything more than "look at this idiot" made me realise that's the problem with the other script as well.

>>34808693
>>34809299
you're welcome, but don't take my criticism too closely to heart. the other anons responded positively to the script, so i wouldn't say that 'look at this dumb otaku' objectively hurts it. i think it would place a lot of the burden of humor on the actors.
it also has a lot to do with the audience. on one hand, there will be people who read this who are at least familiar with animu/mango, and on the other there will be people who either think of anime as 'chinese cartoons' or only miyazaki/porkyman. the humor of that script is gonna be very different to these two groups. maybe it will come across like big bang theory's nrrrd culture humor to the latter, i don't know. and maybe a third group, people who are familiar with anime on your level or beyond, where the humor is more like a self-deprecating chuckle, like you alluded to in how you wrote the otaku.
if it helps, do a high-level 'this is what i'm trying to do with this piece' for each variation of your drafts. if you do end up acting/filming it out, it might help to keep this version anyway and see if it comes across better. like doing two different takes of a scene.

It's pretty polarized. The people in the Undyne thread are just happy I'm making stuff for them, the thread was pretty dead before I started. Sometimes my stuff gets posted in /utg/ on /vg/ or whatever and they tend not to like it cause I write the character a lot differently from how she acts in game. Idk if you read that little disclaimer I put at the bottom of the pastebin I linked but basically I think you need to take a lot of liberties with a character like that (since Undyne in the game is pretty two-dimensional) in order to be able to write anything compelling, and since I just do requests it's a pretty even mix between just like literal porn and actual stories with a plot and shit.
>>34809660

>>34809671

Here's another script I did recently.
This one is based on the idea of Sexual Reassignment Surgery. one thing that I've always been amused by is why people who get these surgeries try to emulate body parts rather than improve on them.
For example, with one type of phalloplasty for FTMs, it's an ugly meat sock but it gets erect through a pump that is located in the scrotum. Need an erection? Squeeze the ballsack and pump it up.
Don't need it anymore? Just open the release valve and it's limp again in no time.
It's a useful feature that I wish my dick had years ago during high school when I was sitting in maths with a raging hard-on brought on by boredom.
So what interested me was why couldn't apply that same idea of "improving" towards SRS for transwomen? USB ports, custom decals, LEDs, phone chargers etc. That's the driving idea behind this sketch.
The archetype of a doctor who's just a salesman for the latest medical products and pills was something that was fun to work in around this idea as well.

In addition a couple of spelling/grammar errors, I'm not to sure about the line "You didn't...".
I'm trying to convey that the patient knows what the surgeon is about to say and can't believe.
It's one of things which I can easily convey through speech and body language but typing it on a page doesn't seem to adequately describe it.

>>34810601
can you explain a little bit on why you used punctuation the way you did (e.g brackets, pipes, parentheses)?
>>34810908
Not sure really. I don't know, it sounds dumb but I just don't like to obey punctuation when I don't have to. It's not something I find important and it's just kind of something I've always done. I do use it sometimes though. Depends on what I write really.
>>34810890
It's made as a reference to Rat Fink (and similar artwork) by Ed "Big Daddy" Roth
>>34810858
thank you, I like that you acknowledge the structure and placement of things, it took me way too long to get it right
>>34811040
Thank you. That was bugging me.
>>34811002
by punctuation i really meant how you've segmented things at times with brackets, pipes, parentheses, slashes, or quotation marks. like, what was going through your head when, say, you wrote "[wolf//"? i mean, sometimes you just instinctually feel like putting certain words in a certain order or breaking up the sentences in a certain way, i get that. but, and i mean this in a polite and constructive way, i'm not sure that the punctuational cleaving works with the piece.
why is this poem your favorite?
>>34811083
Thanks! I think this is the first time anyone has ever said anything about anything I've written. I made a tumblr to post stuff on but I hate people so much I don't want to tag what I write because they might message me or something.
I don't remember to be honest! I kind of write things and when I feel better I close the book. It's more of a visual thing than anything. It doesn't necessarily mean what the object (bracket or pipe) implies, like just because there is some sort of punctuation or symbol doesn't mean that its to be read? If that makes any sense?
>>34811204
right, i wasn't taking those symbols to be read but visually speaking they break up the sentences in certain ways. and it creates patterns, like i think it's intriguing that the double brackets [[ visually link a few lines together, and the double pipes || is almost a false pair of brackets in a sense.
do you have another poem to post?

It has problems kicking over. Before, it had this same problem, and it turned out the carbs were clogged. The guy I bought it from owed me a free repair if there were any problems, so he fixed it, and it ran better than when I first got it.
It had problems kicking over recently, and I thought it was just the battery since it barely kicked up and the headlight would fade, so I charged the battery (even when it seemed fairly high). My bike wouldn't kick up and stay, it would put slower and slower until dying. Trying to turn it on after this barely worked, then died. I opened the choke, and it didn't work after that.
I didn't ride my bike much for like a month, but I left the petcock off and kept it on the center stand. Everything I should do.
I think I let it becone gunked in the carb line again. Great timing too, as I just got a job and it is my my mode of transportation. Hey, got to remember to pay that DMV fee, okay goy? You know, the one you paid for late last year and have to repay only because of the timin of payment by the previous owner?
Crushed a bit on the fairings by my garage door recently too.

Don't wait.
The only thing that will change with time is that you'll kick yourself for waiting so long to get back to something you love to do.
Doesn't take a lot of tools and supplies to get into stained glass (or take a class somewhere pretty reasonably at an art center or something).
Just avoid that trap of thinking, "I'll do this later when I have time". There's always something that seems more important, but in the long run, it rarely is.

i took the photos in a park at night to make the light trail, developed the film, amplified the negatives with a scanner and played a bit with the contrast

The demo reel was decent for someone fresh out of high school. It showed some variety in the styles of film-making you can achieve and I'm actually pretty interested in watching that film with the box head guy. That seems up my alley.
However,
>>34825180
I didn't like that proof of concept trailer.
It showed that you have access to footage but it doesn't show that you can do anything with. It's just a montage of French Foreign Legion people doing stuff set to ill-fitting music.
>What is the documentary actually about?
Is it about what the FFL does? Is it about the effect it has on its soldiers? Is it about your brother specifically or is it about the soldiers in the FFL in general?
>What style of documentary is it?
Is it a fly-on-the-wall documentary? Interviews cut with FFL footage? FFL footage with voiceovers? Just the FFL footage tells us nothing about what sort of documentary it is?
>What is the main hook of the documentary?
Why should people watch it? Does it cover a shocking event, an emotional journey, a very interesting subject? You should show what the hook is that will make people want to watch it.
Have you got the answers to these questions? You should have the answer to these questions in the proof of concept. As it is, it doesn't prove anything other than you have access to FFL footage.
On top of that, there were a few extended shots that really went for too long and slowed everything down as well as inconsistent audio mixing.
Skiing behind the vehicle with guns looked pretty fun though.

Thanks, I'm glad you liked the demo reel. unfortunately the box film will never escape the editing room, and will remain unfinished for various reasons.
I agree that the Legion thing is sloppy. It was just intended to gauge interest and show a few people to see if people would watch that sort of thing. I'm currently making a better edit that's more focussed on the story, just gotta wait for new footage.

>unfortunately the box film will never escape the editing room, and will remain unfinished for various reasons.
Can you tell us why? Can you show any more footage of it?
>gauge interest and show a few people to see if people would watch that sort of thing.
When there's nothing other than raw footage, it's a poor way to gauge interest. It's like showing someone raw chicken breast and asking if they're excited for dinner. You've got something you can use but you haven't shown them what you're planning to do with it.
Tell me more about your plan for the documentary. What's the story? How are you presenting it?
Drew this awhile back
Haven't been drawing lately at all because I've been doing writing instead, but I hope to get back into it seriously at some point.

>>34827200
and this is just as incredible. do you have anywhere I can find your work on?
>>34826758
First reason is I was having some camera troubles while filming, so a large portion of it has some severe lighting/grain issues. Second reason is I got too cocky in terms of scope/story and the dialogue is a mess. Third is I did a really rushed job to finish editing it for the end of that year of school and completely fucked it up. Hated the end result so much that I've never gone back to finish editing.
If you want to see more though, It was a sequel to a previous short I made, which is here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgvc503tGKY
And the trailer for the unfinished sequel is here if you really want to see more.

The gauging of interest was mainly just to see if a documentary about the legion would be of interest in the first place. I got a lot of positive feedback which is why I'm going to move forward with it.
I honestly have no idea how precisely I'd present the actual documentary. Right now I've just got some footage, access to more footage if I want it, and the story surrounding it. My current plan is to finish the second improved version of the trailer and pitch it to a few people I know in the industry.
There's some complications and problems with the story because some of it's personal to me and my brother so I'm not sure how much of my life I want to actually share with the audience. It's really just a concept and footage that I have no idea how to use right now.

had never heard of him thanks for mentioning him i do like his style

unfortunately no, i just have it saved on my computer

Been trying to learn digital painting lately but I have a hard time grasping colors and light. Goal was to reach a level where I could get some freelancing jobs drawing stuff, but no luck yet. Got a while to go still probably.
>>34823384
I took their training program so it cost me some money lol
but I met a lot of cool writers and directors and I met one who put my work in his sketch show. I've got some friends who are doing an internet sitcom that I worked with and they got picked up by the AV Club who did an article about them.
I'm a little bit at odds with them over political and ideological stuff though, they prefer more nerdy and superhero and comic book oriented comedy and I prefer history and politics and shit like that
>>34827454

That's a fair enough reason. Hopefully you can remake it one day.
You should focus on mapping out what you want to do with your documentary first. If you can get your intended format and ideas/events that you want to cover, you're off to a flying start.
>There's some complications and problems with the story because some of it's personal to me and my brother so I'm not sure how much of my life I want to actually share with the audience.
From my perspective, that's a good hook right there.
>Visionary film-maker [YOUR NAME HERE] presents a powerful documentary about his elder brother serving overseas in the French Foreign Legion. A gripping examination of family ties, it's a deeply personal journey between two brothers seperated by thousands of miles.
Boom, enjoy your Best of Sundance Film Festival and fuck some hipster chicks.
Of course, that's only if you feel comfortable sharing something personal with the audience. If not, that's fine.
>>34812707
I had a teacher who taught me programming and would knit in class
He was a cool guy
>>34802392
I really love this photo.
gud stuff.
>>34827534
I think you should try spreading your work, not just posting on an /r9k/ thread. I'd love to buy your prints or merch or whatever if they were in my budget. right on, anon
>>34827681
Problem is I also gotta work out what he's comfortable sharing and how it might impact my relationship with my parents. If you really dig into the motivations behind why he left and how it happened it's got a lot to do with abuse and trauma and all sorts of nasty shit that I'm not sure I want all out there in the public.
So ideally I could find a way to make the story compelling while still not saying too much and being fairly subtle with a great deal of nuance.
That's not exactly easy which is why it's still just an idea.
>>34812707
>it's almost purely a woman only hobby
Almost, there are guys that knit though, I knew a guy in HS who would sometimes do it during our slower classes when we had free time. And at my current uni the arts clubs sometimes set up booths to sell shit near the end of the year and both the pottery and knitting clubs have a fair amount of guys every year
>>34827612
Man, if I could do that, I would.
Where I live, there's no real opportunities for that sort of thing. There's plenty of bars with open mic nights for stand-up comedians but that shit terrifies the living fuck out of me. Theatres are more comfy and safe.
Although someone just started an extremely amateur improv group in the area which I'm going to so I can at least get some sort of practice playing off other people and hopefully get some people to bounce ideas off/make connections to hopefully shoot something one day.
Have you got a link to the sketch you wrote being performed?
>I'm a little bit at odds with them over political and ideological stuff though, they prefer more nerdy and superhero and comic book oriented comedy and I prefer history and politics and shit like that
That sounds annoying. I hope you find some creative partners who want to do the same sort of subject matter that you do.
>>34827810
See, now that sounds like a really compelling documentary subject but you've got some good reasons on why you would want to avoid it.
It's a shitty situation, especially as I'm guessing it hasn't been fully resolved.
>>34827948
Yeah. That and I haven't the first clue on how to make a documentary, never tried before, not even a shitty student one.
I'll probably just finish the next cut of the pitch, show it to some people who actually know what they're doing and we can take it from there.
>>34828053
Well the good thing about documentaries is that format and structure are generally very simple and easy to pick up.
Do you watch many documentaries?
>>34827889
I don't live in Chicago any more and I am desperately trying to move back. I'm in a cultural malaise and I have no writing outlets at the moment. I'm writing for my brother's blog and doing movie and TV reviews at the moment.
I'm terrified of stand-up too. Second City wanted me to do improv but even that terrifies me. I would rather write the material and have others act it out.
One of our cast members put it on his vimeo account apparently:
https://vimeo.com/123624177
>>34828136
I do not, which is why it's a bit foreign to me. I really should watch some to get a feel for it, just never got around to it.
I make music

also, I would like to know if someone is down to draw a picture of a shit ton of trees (whatever quality)
>>34828272
>An hour and twenty minutes.
I'll probably watch the whole thing later on but have you a timestamp for when your sketch starts?
Or vague description of the premise so I can identify it when it comes on?
>>34828282
Well that's your problem. It's a bit hard for you to prove you can make a documentary if you don't watch many documentaries to begin with.
You should start with some Louis Theroux documentaries. It's bit unconventional because he tends to put himself in his documentaries a bit more than most people do but it's still a great starting point on people focused documentaries.
I'd recommend:
>Louis Theroux's Extreme Love: Autism
>Louis Theroux's LA Stories: City of Dogs
>The City Addicted to Crystal Meth
>A Place for Peadophiles
As good starting points for his documentaries.
A good example of a style of documentary film-making you could use for your documentary would be Blackfish as well as Graphic Sexual Horror.
They're both good examples of how to frame a documentary narrative through a mixture of interviews and archive footage.
this one is from highschool

Good man. Immerse yourself in documentaries.
Study as much as you can about the format and structure of documentaries. Not just from the documentaries but as much learning materials as you can get your hands on.
Also, check out Werner Herzog's and Jacques Cousteau's documentaries. Those are great.

I recently started doing shitty pixel art for it. It's really comfy and this png is where I live now. Sometimes I think about using the setting for a game or a cartoon.
