All physical attraction, both male and female, comes down to one thing: will my offspring with this partner be good and healthy.
For example, women like strong, tall men because that indicates good, healthy offspring, and that they'll be able to protect the family from danger.
Men like big, perky breasts because they are an indicator of good health (high estrogen levels like the other guy said). They also like broad hips because it indicates that the woman will be good at bearing children.

Of course they knew what good health looked like. I just described traits that are almost universally associated with female beauty because they are indicators of health. We now have scientific processes to confirm the ancient suspicion/superstitions that these traits implied health.

I googled this and found that this was only present in birds 7 days old or less. Tests failed when tried on older birds.
