I'm thinking about maybe starting an online relationship. Is there any real way to prevent being catfished, or do I just have to be trusting and hope I get lucky?
ask them to video chat and provide proof of who they are if you have to. this could be anything as simple as a picture with a sign holding up their name. sometimes its easy to tell if you're being catfished, though, if shit doesn't add up. google image search is also helpful.

That sounds good enough. I'm guessing that a hesitancy to video chat would probably be a common sign of catfishing
video chat is pretty much the easiest way to tell if they're hiding something. also ask a ton of questions too and try to remember the responses so that you can catch them telling a lie if it makes no sense.

Is the person a girl or guy? I think girls are more likely to be a catfish, probably some old perv jerking off dressed in an old ratty bathrobe.

A cat fish would avoid a video chat, but that doesnt mean all people who are reluctant are cat fishing. I was always hesitant because I wanted to clean my room, and didn't like how I looked on the shitty camera anyways. I assume those feelings would be even more pronounced with a woman.
snapchats pretty good for confirming things
