Because they had a moment of weakness, so they got swept up in something that makes them feel like they have purpose when really they do not. It's an empty addiction, like an abusive husband, or 4chan. You realize that your situation is shit, and that it isn't real, but you have nowhere else to go because the illusion has cut you off completely.
