Does keeping a diary/journal really help with mental health or is it just a meme?

I write down almost exclusively bad experience in it. I never read it, not to realize how shitty my life is. That's not very healthy I suppose, but on the other hand it's my shoulder to cry on.
dunno
I do it, my therapist told me to try it. I keep a journal for 3 years now although I only read it back if I want to see how I "progress". It definitely helps when I feel like there is a lot on my mind. It's like venting out to someone but you're venting out on a piece of paper instead.

it helps "upload" your memories to a separate flash drive so you don't have to carry them in your brain
i only log important shit tho
Any kind of log of your life can and will eventually be used against you.
Bottling up emotions mentally destroy you. It really helps to write them down.

Haha,
This shit is so true

If you tend to write down everything that's wrong in your life then definitely not. This just becomes negative reinforcement and makes you focus on the bad, which is definitely not good for mental health.
