Capitalism is a meme that only works as long as you assume infinite, endless growth of the economy. Once mommies stop shitting out babies like crazy, once consumers stop consuming like crazy, once you run out of wars to keep the factories going, once you run out of cheap sources of fossil fuels, it all crumbles to dust. It all revolves around the unspoken idea that your grandchildren will pay for your sins and postpone the inevitable collapse of our society for another generation or two.

Basic income will happen as automation begins to define labour value in this century.

It's called an investment. It creates a class of people able to study, work jobs that would be beneficial to society but not profitable in itself, along with making it easier for people to invest and create their own businesses.
Is everyone going to do it? No. It's the best thing for actual capitalism though as people won't have to play feudalism to a corporation that is just sucking profits up to the top and keeping them there. All the money in the world if you put it in a piggy bank the most of it belongs to just a handful of people. Basically they're so efficient and the rest of the economy is so inefficient as that it will NEVER correct itself to convince these people to ever put much of any of that money back into the economy, a ubi is practically the only thing that can fix stuff. That is if the already efficient "capitalists" don't suck up all the profits and put the economy back into a depression.

I love this mentality. Please tell me how millions of people will get employment when automation completely takes over the economy; when human labour is practically worthless. There's a reason why part-time work and zero hour contracts are surging in popularity and its not because of human laziness. It is no longer profitable to offer someone full time employment when parts of that profession can be mechanised. Listen, this is the future - security bots controlled by people in Africa through a remote and a screen, lorries entirely self-driven (etc.etc). Basic income is an inevitability.

Hey here's another fun fact, to be eligible for disability benefits you must have earned a certain number of tax credits first; working for a period of years before becoming disabled. Otherwise you're ineligible regardless of disability because you haven't payed enough into the system yet.
