>>
>>34723610
Being a scientist is not comfy. There is a lot of competition either internal, if it unique research, so a lot of people want your job. Or external, if it is generic research, so a lot of labs are working on the same thing.
You have to give a lot of presentations regarding your progress, you also have to work in a team because "mad loner scientist" is a meme.

I don't think I'd describe it as comfy. It's one of those "everyone is trying to kill you constantly" types of games. It is fun though. Lots of really cool and iconic levels, enemies and encounters.

>that giant tentacle you have to shoot with a rocket engine to kill
>that silent of ninjas that suddenly ambush you out of nowhere
>that bunker full of explosives that's surrounded by mines and snipers
>that giant behemoth with flamethrower arms you have to fry
>that helicopter ambush while you're walking over the giant dam

>that experimental weapon that turns enemies into meaty chunks

It's the setting that's comfy, more than the gameplay. The gameplay is pretty standard late-90s shooter stuff. (not that that's a bad thing, I wish we had more of that nowadays) But Half-Life did the "secret underground facility" thing better than any game before or since. It had a "20 minutes into the future" kind of aesthetic that was neither trying too hard to be realistic, nor too fanciful.

Also some enterprising lunatics set out to re-implement HL1 from scratch on the Source engine. They called it "Black Mesa" and originally released it as a free mod, then Valve noticed and now you can buy it. When I looked last like a year ago you could still get it for free as a mod if you had HL2, though. Check it out, it's breddy gud.

DoD is still around, it was always the second biggest one after CS.

The mod you're thinking of is Natural Selection I think. There was one in the same vein (a team match where you research and vote on upgrades) called Science and Industry. You could whack the other team's scientists over the head and bring them to your base to research your upgrades faster.

Also Rocket Crowbar, aka "we wanted to make some new weapons, so we took some acid" They had gravity grenades that'd suck in everything near em and then explode and fling anything that wasn't dead across the map. I'd cook off the grenade and then run around suicide bombing people, since grenades in HL1 never go off in your hand, only when you release the fire button. Only mod I've ever played that was better on shitty amateurish deathmatch maps made by 13yos.

They had Action Half-Life for a while too. Spiritual successor to Action Quake 2. Fun times.
