Any self-harmers out there? What makes you decide to self-harm?

I just started. I had the urge for a while but attributed it to edginess. Then once I tried it, I realized I liked knowing I was scarring myself. I like the blood and the pain and the permanence. I like keeping it a secret, and it's somehow made the last couple days more bearable.

Calm anxiety, and I like the feeling.

It's a coping device like everything else. You do it to forget about what's bothering you. Like how some people smoke weed or how people get so involved in hobbies. It's to forget about everything you hate for just a moment.

I beat my arms until they badly bruise, although only very occasionally. I'm 25.

When I'm really angry, upset, just generally unstable it makes everything more tolerable. It makes for a good vent and helps me forget whatever my issues were in the moment. Think there's probably a touch of self-loathing in it, but I'm not in the mood to psycho-analyse myself.
