My dream was always to do computer science at one of the world's top universities. I'm here now and...

I've failed my first semester. I'm ruining my life and I can't stop.

How do stop procrastination? I don't want to be a dropout failure.

Literally how?

Didn't revise for 2 of 3 of the exams and didn't turn up to them. I can retake them in August but it's going to be capped to 40% so my average for this year is fucked unless I demolish the second semester exams.
>>
What classes are you taking?

First semester we had elementary logic, programming, another maths module and a basic hardware class.

I'm in the UK, we don't choose classes in the first year - everything is compulsory. Also the course is 3 years - no major/minor system.

i can help you!

just eat a bunch of amphetamines, and bang out a week's worth of work in one stretch. then drink/smoke the rest of the week.

Your problem is that your studying for the dream of being in a prestigious college.

You need to study for a greater purpose like buying a house and marrying. That's why married couples do well in school. They literally don't get test anxiety.

that got me through college with a 3.0 GPA, while only attending 25% of my classes. no joke, I kept a record of how many times I missed each class and how recently i had shown up to each class, so i know that i only went 1/4 of the time

>am now an english major.

didn't bill gates drop out of harvard? You almost got half of it, but you fucked up on the 2nd part.

Well, I was pretty feckless as an undergrad, and actually I was pretty feckless as a graduate student too. I basically graduated through talent alone, which isn't very good advice. I can say one thing about getting a PhD, which is, I made very little headway on research at the beginning. Midway through I moved to a (US DOE) national lab, and I dunno, I guess getting forced into the routine of going to work for a set amount of time each day and being surrounded by work-things helped a lot.
So if you really care, maybe you should designate a three or four hour block each weekday (that doesn't overlap with your classes) and, like, go to the library for that time every day. Even if you don't work for the entire duration, if you think "this is the time to work" and only do moderate fucking around and stick to the routine, maybe it'll help.

this is actually how you do it, can confirm. you get so bored that you can't help but work on things and then you start to feel good about working on things. proven method

I wanted to do the same with philosophy at a place like that. I did poorly in high school, so I'm essentially barred from ever attending such an institution.

My life was pretty much ruined from the start.
>>
>>34692036
this is a great idea, thanks. I think one reason I'm faltering is because there's only like 2h per day of compulsory classes so I spend the rest of the time doing fuck all since nothing else is timetabled.
>>

>this is actually how you do it

no it isn't. You'll just go on youtube and watch netflix.

The only thing library prevents is porn watching, which is KINDA helpful. But you need more.
>>
>>34692117
The hope is that you'll start feeling dissonant about watching Netflix in the library. Unfortunately we can't really advise OP not to bring a laptop, owing to his major, and anyway, kids in Gen Z would probably die without their smartphone. But this is why I advised also trying to think "this is the time for work," because that might amp up the dissonance with fucking around during work-time. Or anyway, creating a habit out of work is possible---after all, people do graduate from university.

>>34691645
Embrace the procrastination, bro. There is nothing as satisfying as having something you desperately need to do and deliberately refusing to work on it until the deadline ticks past. It's like scratching an itch. Embrace that sloth demon, its a lot more satisfying than the life you'd get if you memed yourself into a degree anyways.

>money/house

my parents are giving me their house since they're not gonna live there any more. they're also pretty well off and own a lot of properties so I can pretty much do no work and still earn 100k+ per year
>>
>>34691645
This happened to me, I started university in 2012 and i tought i would be graduating last year, now with luck i'll graduate in 2018, to think I was considered one of the smartest students back in high school feels like a bad joke now
>>
>>34693291
are you a good student now? if so how did you do it?
>>
Stay strong this angst
>>
Please understand that what you are experiencing is not procrastination, it is lack of direction. Start from the beginning What is your major goal bro? Computer Science is your major goal. Focus on that and the crazy adventures you'll have in your future.
>>
>>34693823
Study A LOT for the first two terms, but i only had this problem with math's and physics because everything else after that is a piece of cake so i don't need to study anymore
So, no, i'm not a good student but having a good grasp of the logic behind any topic makes any subject substantially easy
>>
>>34691645
Why the fuck would you want to do research at a university? Find some way to make a lot of money and just do research in your spare time for funsies.
>>
>>34694271
huh? im talking about my undergrad, anon. i want to work for a big company when this is done.
