Other old people I'd be friends with would press me to kick my son to the curb and not pay to support them, so it would tarnish my image a bit.

On the other hand, it has to be nice to have a wife and child(ren) that will love you unconditionally for your entire life. Offspring don't have romantic love so it's different.

Really, if I was in their position, I'd just feel sorry for the kid and try to spend time with them when possible. No need for hostility or resentment. Would only bring stress resulting in health problems.
