Mostly herd mentality.

People are cruel when someone beyond the herd is trying to associate with them, the herd doesn't except, therefore, in an effort to maintain the mutual respect of the herd people will turn their backs on you or in worse situations they will never let you hear the end of it.

The burden a robot must carry, your social life and experiences all depend on timing or the lack thereof in your case.
