3D assets are far harder to make than 2D, especially when you have programmer levels of art skill. I also exclusively build 2D because it lets me focus more on the programming parts and still end up with half-decent results.

Also I think both of you have an exaggerated idea of what's involved in 3D game dev. Purely from a code perspective, 3D is really not much harder -- we just all have higher standards for 3D games because 2D games are largely stuck in "retro" archetypes.

That's the thing though, today's "retro" 2D style largely comes from the peak of 2D gaming. It was still limited in many ways (namely rotation/scaling), but allowed for relatively high-quality art. It mostly just seems retro because we have 3D (and better screens) now.

The "retro" 3D style that you're talking about, on the other hand, is from the early days of 3D technology, not any sort of peak. They made the most of their limitations, sure, but most of those games don't exactly look good.

Have you played far cry 4? There's a little array of sequences in which you're in first person fighting demons with a bow/throwing knives and you find a white tiger spirit that aids you in combat. I was thinking this would probably be... kinda like samurai era japan comes to mind? The PC is a swordman who is feared but also revered for his work with this spirit-beast. Also have you played the last of us? there's a part where joel and ellie get separated and it's awesome, I would definitely want to incorporate something like that. You can bundle it into a .app for Mac, and concat it into a .exe for Windows (though it needs to be surrounded with a couple dlls as is typical).

I'm not aware of a good solution for Linux, but it's packaged for most major distros so you can just tell Linux users to install love2d and then just double-click your game's .love file.

The game has two objectives depending of your faction.
If you are Spanish you objective is fuck the French as much as possible until you get help from England and destroy all the French bases but if you are French you have to hunt the guerrilla before the British come and collect the taxes for the French.
In the game every unit is divided in individual infantry who get injury and die rather than have hp. Also you can have support in form of specialize personnel like doctor or objects like artillery. You also must manage the food the morale and the stamina of your troops.

This. A lot of developers tend to overlook gameplay for some reason. I've played games with great settings and beatiful graphics (even 2D games) but they were awful boring because the gameplay was not engaging in the least.

I am also a game dev but I am an artist, I make everything myself except the controller scripts etc, I just use the asset stores. Code can be used again and again and tweaked slightly to make it different. Prop assets and world models are the hard part.

If you have a good game artist that is where the money is at. So much generic coders out there selling scripts for a few dollars, but you cant do the same with models.
