When someone asks you if youd ever consider dating their friend; does that mean the friend in question asked this person to find out?

Because thats how it normally works but I may have waited too long to do anything about it.

this happened to 2 guys i know

his best friend asked me what i thought of him
and told me he liked me...

and i didnt know this (the fucking subplot or what was going on behind -_-) (that he was probably ordered or asked to ask how i felt by the original guy who liekd me)
