I'm in a weird place because I'm not religious at all, but after really reading about it's effects on society I'm seeing how important it is to keep everything in tact and get everyone to keep contributing. For some reason when you look on a large scale people can not have morals when they are not religious. I don't know why that is but without it hedonism and nihilism always takes over and becomes unstoppable.

I wonder if an essentially 'atheist religion' could work, with guidelines, shared mythology (even if scientific), regular community gatherings etc. I think some sort of 'belief' to bind people together is needed - maybe building some sort of future utopia. Gods/deities are just more effective and work on the imagination better.

Humanity tends to self correct anyway, as religious people out-breed degenerates.
