I'm not a nihilist but I'll tell you my understanding of it. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

If nihilism is the belief that nothing matters in this world, then you can either take that as a negative or positive. Negative in that nothing you do matters, no matter what you do or what you acomplish. Everyone dies after all, and whatever legacy you leave will eventually be washed away by the sands of time. Positive in that since nothing you do matters, you are free to do whatever you want. You want to spend all day inside? Nothing matters anyway. You just did some cringey shit? Messed your life up? Spent all your money on a ferrari? Nothing matters. You can live your life without worry, because you know it's all meaningless in the end; and since it's meaningless, why not make the most of it? Life is an accident on a floating speck of dust in a blink of time. Might as well do what makes the collection of molecules and electrical pulses called your brain happy.

If you were asking why people identify as nihilst, then I imagine it is because just saying they are nihilist is the simplest way of explaining their thought train to people they choose to interact with.
