I thought I was done for when a girl I liked rejected me about halfway through high school, just like your crush just did to you. She was a bitch about it and it hurt me so bad. Hopefully you learned never to let yourself go head-over-heals again. The longer you let tension build up the harder it is to deal with rejection. When you're interested, ASK ASAP. Start with the casual "grab food/coffee" and slowly get to know her from there. Doing this allows you to reduce the first stage of dating to something trivial and non-committal. If it works out - it's a great date. If it doesn't work out - then it was just coffee, and you can chalk it up as networking; maybe you can use that person for something a later time.

When I started looking at meeting women like this I've become a lot more bolder and have been on more dates because of this. A lot of them go nowhere but I wasn't hurt because asked them out for coffee immediately before I could build up an irrational and unfounded obsession in my head.
