People call them "cold sores" because the cold weather tends to dry and crack your lips and then their herpes can get through and turn into a pus-filled, infectious sore.
They also call them "cold sores" because many people don't realise it's actually herpes and many others are in denial and/or trying to cover it up. Disgusting fuckers.

You might be having an allergic reaction to lip balm. I had the same problem for months, the solution was to stop using lip balm and stop licking my lips so much.
