I literally do it as a job. I get paid to go and talk to people I have never met before about what theyre interested in. It's not hard at all.
Easiest example I can give is say you are at a bus stop waiting and someone comes along. You don't want to stand around in silence do you? Just say "Hey, how you doing?"
Now, 90% of the people you meet are going to be nice normal people and will reply "Hey, I'm good, how are you?"
Now don't fuck this bit up. Give a positive response that theyre going to remember, like "I'm fabulous, thanks!" Why fabulous? Because fucking nobody says fabulous in response to that question and you'll usually get a smile from it. Then just ask them what they're getting up to that day and the conversation will just flow from there.
Also, talk to cashiers and receptionists. Theyre used to talking to people everyday and are pretty good at it. They usually enjoy a good conversation to break the monotony.
Just keep asking questions and talking, try not to interrupt the flow of conversation. If it does get interrupted, just say something like "Where was I? Oh yes I remember..." and carry on.
This shit isn't hard, just takes practice.

I'm a bartender. I get into a lot of conversations. The main part of the job isnt drinks, its conversation. The bus stop thing was an example of getting into a conversation.
And yes, people actually do straight up ask for numbers. I've done it plenty of times, just say to them "Hey, I'd like to get your number from you." MAKE SURE YOU GET THEIR NUMBER. That way they know you're interested in them.
I get that the biggest problem might be confidence, but seriously, whats the worst that could happen? They could ask you to stop talking to them. In that case just stop talking to them and move on to other people. But as long as you are nice and polite, you should be golden

I wake up at about 7 every day to go buy breakfast and cook it before i go to uni. I set off to go to lectures at about 8. They last from 9 to about 4 every day (some days finishes at 2 some days 6). They arent constant over this period. There is invariably a 2 hour gap during which i can self loathe and phonepost or wander around aimlessly.

After uni i go shopping on the way home. I probably get home about about 5 or 5:30 if i need to go to the chinese store. Ill probably cook now or prepare what i want to cook later. Then ill watch something or play vidya until about 6:30. After this ill do work if i have to which takes me to no later than 8. If i feel up to it it might go down to the university bar at my hall and try to talk to people. I know about 3 people there including the bartender. I dont normally particularly enjoy this but i feel like its good for me. Ill go to bed at 11/11:30 if i do this (the bar closes at 12 anyway) if not ill probably go to bed at 10:30 or so. That is, unless i go on 4chan like tonight in which case ill stay up too late and regret it tomorrow (its already 1:30).

Thats my life more or less every day. I know a few people at my uni hall but i dont really like them and dont have anyone id consider a friend even if they might consider me a friend. Most of my interaction is a facade.

I know at the uni near where I live there are games societies and tabletop societies and all sorts of activities you could be getting involved in.
