Do you think it would be a better idea to buy a relatively cheap older house and have a shitload of renovations done, or have one built based on blueprints for an older house?

Snow looks pretty rad on old houses.
Building based on old blueprints could be a nightmare because the builders would need to conform to modern standards by law and that could change the house dramatically (i.e. not having enough room for the stairs because the old stairs run was too small and need to be made longer.)
I mean either way you're looking at hundreds of thousands of dollars so whatever, do what you want.

yes, do light interior renovations and don't expand it so you don't get wrecked by property taxes.
