I started with katawa shoujo and have slowly played a few more. nekopara is a nice one if you want a popular one to talk about with friends

The Majikoi series strikes a pretty good balance between being accessable for entry-level plebs and having lots of 2D girls. Plus there's two 40ish hour VNs and two 5-10 hr VNs that are fully translated, so it'll keep you busy.
