Nope, Ted wasn't a loner as a teen. He did have an unusual family situation being raised by his grandparents who told him his mother was actually his sister. He found out about that a bit later on.

The initial impetus for his killing may have been his college love interest. She left him ostensibly because wasn't rich/successful etc. He later became what he thought she wanted him to be, got back together with her, asked her to marry him, she said yes, he then leaves without explanation. It is possible he did the entire thing to spite her.

>The Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule. This one is interesting becuase Ann Rule knew Ted before all the killing. They worked together for a suicide hotline. It's a great book but does contain some factual errors and Rule has some theories about Ted that have no basis in reality, in my opinion.

>The Only Living Witness by Stephen G. Michaud. This is a more factually accurate account of Bundy's case and includes analysis of the interviews Bundy did in prison before he was executed.

That's one of the crackpot theories Rule has that I don't see any basis for. Ted killing a child in his neighbourhood as a teen is out of character with the rest of his story.

Good question and it's tough to say. Law enforcement communication tech and associated laws to facility interagency investigation is way better now than it was in the 60's-90's. But who knows. There is also a whole lot better access to information on investigation techniques so I suppose a serial killer could use that to advantage to evade capture longer.
