Being a military officer or a business executive also provides leadership experience that is relevant for elected office. Not literally every business executive is unethical. Dwight Eisenhower had never held an elected office, but he was a good president. Obama was a freshman senator when he was elected, and he was a terrible president. ISIS couldn't have been founded without his actions. People consider being a senator to be relevant experience for the presidency, but I think that business or military experience is more relevant. That branch of government is called the "executive branch" after all. Experience in the senate would be more relevant for working as a lawyer than as a president.
