Probably more complicated than we think. But the hardcore otaku are likely to be the ones who gives the industry most profits as they can sell all sorts of merch along with the shows, so they're required to make a lot of anime that caters to that clientele. Haven't got any statistics but would also appreciate that more shows are being made nowadays. If you ever see a show come out nowadays that fits your definition of "good" then that show probably has the moeshit/teenwank shows for its very existence.
