If you look on Craigslist there are always "free to good home" dogs. Usually big ones too because they get too much for some people.

As long as you've got a freezer, something the size of a German Shepherd will keep you in quality eats for a month. Just needs some veggies, sides and a creative mind for recipes. It's very strong tasting meat.
