The only reason why others will see you as pathetic or awkward is if that's what YOU think of yourself. People reflect the way you see yourself. It's visible when someone feels awkward, especially to women. You don't have to be an alpha to attract women, you just have to fake it til you make it.

For instance, the first time I had a girl over, I was terrified. I was sweating and was worried if I wouldn't know what to say. But I decided that I would take it slow and not overthink things, like I usually did. Just put yourself out there more. Actively make yourself talk more, with people you know well and people you don't know as well. You don't need to try to weasel into their social events, but make small steps like inviting them to lunch.
