People would be nicer. The problems would be realistic and their solutions would still leave a bit to be desired. The characters wouldn't be reduced to what's in their pants or what they want in their pants. They'd have somewhere to go or something to do. The main character would win in the end, but would leave the story a little more heartbroken than when he entered. He'd know that this still isn't happily ever after, but it'd be good enough for him.
