Exept he was some 12yo idea of a genius. Overly intricate plans that had a ton of failure points, emotionally immature to the point of making simple mistakes, yet building contraptions to protect his notebook that most likely wouldn't work irl etc.

They're all like that though.
Their "plans" and ideas are supposed to show off that they are intelligent rather than something that would realistically be effective. So they come up with overly intricate and risky plans whilst also making stupid mistakes

Being impressive is a whole lot easier than being an irl anime character
You don't even need to be that smart, you just need to be able to convey that you are smart. Most people are easily impressed, add some mysterious appeal to it and you're good to go
