My otismo whispers to my ears that greater whirlwind is for high level characters in BGII (or you're talking about the high level additionnal book, which is optionnal and was basically Ad&d 2.5) wether I can think of very potent crowd control spells.
Sleep (level 1) can incapacitate a full team of humanoid monsters, and they have no Save.

If you all can't get along with just casting grease and cantrip you probably should play something else.
