I've experienced a range of Russian cities, including Moscow. Moscow is very nice, comparable to the nice parts of big American cities without the shitty parts/ghettos. "Expensive" is relative to the rest of Russia, cost of living is about the same as a medium-sized American city, not super expensive like NYC or SF, unless you live right in the city center. The surrounding suburbs are even cheaper and also quite nice.
