Well, I can only give personal experiences, so proceed with caution.

In the most depressive phases I actually managed to give myself a motivational boost by refusing to wank. It can actually improve a situation slightly, especially if you are an obsessive wanker. It has the positive side-effect of being able to shoot a huge load after a week or two which will turn your knees into butter if you do it right aswell. But that is pretty much all the benefits already, while you have to obviously face the pain of having to relive your early teens with intrusive thoughts and raging boners all day and after several days feeling like your dick suddenly shrivels up and your body kills its own libido to protect itself.
The half-solution of just jerking off without porn is also not the perfect solution, for me it did not change much psychologically, mostly it just changed the faps themselves. When I wank to porn I feel the need to go on long edge sessions which drain your balls (and yourself) thoroughly, making the whole ordeal dull and unsatisfying in the long run. Wanking without porn is just a placebo, which will leave you equally unsatisfied for other reasons, you still drain your balls and now you treat it like a fastfood meal.
Generally the solution is boring as always: balance in all things. Do not fap if you are bored and have nothing to do, treat it like a special and moderately rare event, where you put on some good porn and take your time to blow a load which brewed for several days, but not too long. This way you can get used to it and still really get off with a good dose of hormones flooding your system, it is all its about in the end. And suppossedly you prevent getting cancer this way.

It is probably autistic as fuck, but I think it would be for the best if you actually experiment a bit and take notes. I did not do it myself, because I am enjoying the chaos in my life. And take care that you do not arrive on /r9k/ with:
