Have ridden for 3+ years. Had girl b4 getting bike. Pull mad wheelies on my Kawisexi 636. Most qt3.14s just shake their head at me.

All I really knew was how to ride a bicycle and how to drive a car with a manual transmission. Bought myself a little 250 and just kind of figured it out on my own. It's definitely different than a bike, especially turning and stopping. The feeling of turning this thing that is pretty massive compared to a bike took some getting used to, and stopping smoothly while putting your feet down at the same time was a little tricky on a tall bike..
>>
>>34104964

Whatever you do don't buy a motorcycle from any Asian country that isn't Japan (well, Taiwan is a borderline case, Taiwanese bikes are sort of okay).

Korean, Indian, Russian, and Chinese bikes are garbage. You'll be spending more of your time either fixing it or paying someone to fix it than actually riding it.
>>
>>34104842

I disagree about that. Bicycling teaches you countersteering, the much greater power of the front brake compared to the rear brake, and gets you used to being treated badly by car drivers.

All major aspects of motorcycle riding.

>taking my test this weekend, what's riding like bros?
Amazing. I typically only ride at night on weekends and it really lets you explore your entire city. I always just go to random places and get lost on purpose just to see all the sights. It's honestly THE of the most deeply introspective experience i've ever had.

Also it's fun to be a little devlish too. One time on halloween I had nothing to do since I'm a loser robot. I saw a group of like 5 bikers riding around a uni campus and I just started riding with em. Soon it turned into like 30+ bikers just roaming. It was fucking fun.

>does it stave away the depression and badfeels?
Yeah, I dont think I've ever felt upset on my bike before unless someone almost just make a left turn into me. Or when I've low sided.

>d-does it get you a gf
Nah still doesnt do that. Most girls I meet are too scared to ride on it anyway. Some girls might even consider it a deal breaker because they "don't want to get attached to someone who might die"
I recommend it man. It might be frustrating in the beginning. It was for me, I bought my brand new bike after my class and dropped it 3 hours in. But its a like a right of passage.

Also I'd recommend not starting on a super sport. A lot of people will say "just do it pussy" but if had listened to them when I started, I'd probably be dead or seriously injured. Not memeing. My 500c cbr can do 0-60 in 5s, which is nothing for super sports, but pretty damn fast in the car world.
>>
>>34105870
No.

Everyone knows how to ride a bicycle. No one in my class knew how to countersteer. They were all baffled. You don't realize how helpful front braking is on a bicycle because it's so light. Most people who ride bikes are safely on the side of the road or on a sidewalk, and don't think about how they're treated by cars.

There is a very vague carryover of the the aspects, but it's not enough to easily pick up for most people.
>>
>>34106796
Can you cruise at 80 on freeways on a 500? Does that feel like it's pushing the engine to the limit?

Speaking of front brake... be careful OP. Either get ABS and yolo it or get non-ABS and eeeeassseee on that front brake.
I was in an emergency stop situation and of course my natural instinct is BRAKE. Well, guess what happens when you lock your wheel? You're going to be hanging out on the pavement.
>>
>>34106839
I can cruise fine, but I'm at about 6,500 of 8,500 RPM so it is kinda pushing it. I max out at like 110 I believe. But honestly it still speeds up fast 0-75 and only decently until like 85+
>>
Riding is tops and this is a good thread. Current bike is a 2008 DL 650, good all around machine, easy and cheap to work on. Plan on doing your own maintenance unless you've got deep pockets.

Taking a rider course is recommended. There are lots of lessons you don't want to learn the hard way.
>>
>>34106839
Yes. People need to know that motorcycles are naturally high strung. A 500cc might be pushing 7k rpm or more on the freeway, but that's just how they are meant to be ridden.
>>
>>34106901
whats a fair price for motorcycle course?im in nyc so i figured it will be expensive but just wanted to know what you guys paid
>>
>>34106796
Yeah I'm heavily leaning on starting with the Grom

I live in London so it's great for filtering since it's so small and light, and everyone I talk to has just constantly been raving about how fucking fun it is to ride.

I still need to save up for a couple months so I can get the 2000 pounds for a used one, but I'm looking forward to it. I was thinking about getting a Ninja 300 but it costs 3500, and desu it sounds like shit even though it's physically a normal sized bike. So I think I'll go straight from this to a 600cc after a year or so of the Grom.

London is very packed so I don't think I'd even find much of an advantage in the higher power of the other bikes.
>>
>>34106928
>>34106839
Yeah they aren't like cars, taking up 80% of your RPMs is no big deal. I did a 4 hour drive on my bike at 80 mph with mid 7k's rpm MAX 8400 or something, no problem at all. Wasn't worried for a second.
>>
>>34106940
Pretty sure I paid abot $220 for a two day course in Anchorage, AK circa 2009
>>
Used to race amateur cross country.

Right now Ive got to save up some money to pay for the tag on my project bike
>>
>>34106947
Grom looks fun, but you'll outgrow anything under 500cc very quickly.
>>
>>34106947
I dont know man, if you ever see a ninja 300 in person and feel its presence, you might just fall in love.
I can't speak for Groms since I dont know much about them. But I think you should do whatever you want.

Not sure if you mean "sounds" like shit because of the exhaust or the specs. But sound-wise my bike is virtually silent and I kinda like it. Makes those late night rides more serene. Also, it helped out maneuver police who wanted to give me a ticket one time. Just turned into a neighborhood and drove around, couldn't hear me at all.
>>
>>34107049

90% of the roads in london are like pic related, the roads are extremely narrow so I dunno

nevertheless I commute from home and so I save up pretty much 90% of my part time job salary, so I could definitely get another bike within 5-6 months if I wanted to.
>>
>>34106947
>>34107049
A used nina 500 is a great starter sport bike as well. Great cult following online offers tons of support and the bike will cruise at 80mph without straining too much. Had one for my 4th bike. Fun machine.
>>
>>34106847
Yes I agree. I've used my brake incorrectly and have had to rely on ABS twice when I was learning.

Veteran riders like RoyalJordanian may say that it is better to learn without one, and there is some truth in that. But I'd hate to think what my experiences would have been like without it.

>>34107129
I live in bongistan, I can't ride anything above a 300cc until I turn 21. So that's a year and a half from now.
>>
>>34107083
Well Ninja 300 isn't really just any 300cc, its the 300cc sport bike. It's fun man. They say "its more fun to ride a slow bike fast, than a fast bike slow". And it's really not even that slow. Also I think they are like 380~ lbs which is a great weight for doing corners. I'd scrape my shoes doing turns all the time... though I don't recommend that haha.
>>
>>34107119
Thing is, you're going to enjoy this and you'll want to do longer rides. This is where the larger displacement will shine. Trust me here anon!
>>
I really want to learn how to ride a motorcycle but I failed my class because I fell attempting to brake on a tight turn. Sprained my hand.

Never got called back to retry with a one-on-one instructor, compared to being in a classroom with people already owning experience.

Thinking about buying a dirt bike really and making it street legal, would this be a good idea?

>>
>>34107136
Eh I bought into that non-ABS for a starter bike garbage and honestly, it's dumb. Yeah, if you start on an ABS you should probably just stick to ABS which limits you, but it's better.
>But I'd hate to think what my experiences would have been like without it
Pretty good chance you'd have lowsided twice. If ABS kicked in, that means your wheel did indeed begin to lock and it stopped it.
>>
>>34107119
Go for it anon. The Grom has a charm.
>>
>>34107193
Just buy an enduro or dual sport. The conversion isn't worth the hassle when what you're looking for is readily available.
>>
>>34107193
nah do like the niggers and just ride it without modification.

>>
Buy proper boots and a helmet then wear them. Jacket/pants/gloves are for comfort and will protect you from road rash but motorcycle boots with ankle support and a good helmet will keep you from getting truly fucked in 95% of falls.
>>
>>34107193
Don't let that stop you anon. Go for another learner course/class.
>>
>>34107273
>gloves are just for comfort
Your inborn human instincts will put your hands on the ground before any other part of your body when you crash
>>
>>34107157
I'm guessing ninja 300 is a pretty common bike then. That would be a great start and you can always upgrade later. Get the right gear and wear it, take a good course and have a blast mang.
>>
>>34106707
I'm in Socal, trying to find my first bike. Either looking at a stripped down new bike for $6k, or gambling on a used bike for $3k. Just bought my helmet on amazon.
>>
>>34107371
$3k is plenty for a good used bike.
>>
>>34107371
are you me?
im from socal too. i got my motorcycle license and everything but the only reason i havent bought a bike yet is because i have absolutely 0 experience buying things like cars, much less a motorcycle and i dont know anyone that rides to help me out
>>
>>34107371
Should be tons of great used bikes down there. Are you any good at evaluating mechanical things?
>>
>>34107371
for your first bike, go for used. you WILL drop and you'll probably have a minor crash, since it's your first time riding.

and you'll outgrow the bike within a year and when you resell, you'll only take a 10% loss as opposed to.. say a 50% loss
>>
>>34107371
>>34107418
What city?

A $3000 budget will give you a ton of options on craigslist, I got my 650 for $2000 in excellent condition

READ THIS FIRST
http://www.clarity.net/adam/buying-bike.html
and maybe browse /dbt/ for a while to get to know what you want and what to look for, if you can stand their constant DRZ memes
>>
>>34107416
$3k for a used bike will usually end up with a Ninja 250 or something that is high mileage and beat up in the southern california market. Used harleys are selling for $6k+

>>34107418
I found a bike I like, but its a '78 Kawasaki with 40k miles. Seemed like a decent price at $3k, but I just don't know. Everything else in my area just costs more. New bikes from the 3 dealerships withing 75 miles of me are $7k unless I want a honda rebel, or Yamaha Star, which everyone says you "grow out of" quickly because they're under powered and kinda small. Even then, they're $5k, then I take the depreciation hit if I want to sell it for $3500.

Even worse, when I ask people on calguns or coworkers who ride, I get retarded answers. Either spend $12k on a new bike, or buy a rebel and sell it then buy something else later on. No I don't want to spend $20k on bikes over the next 5 years.
>>
>>34107444
Yeah, thats what everyone says. Then all the 50 year old riders I talk to say they've never dropped a bike, only the 20 something retards who tried a wheelie dropped their bike.

>>34107432
>should be
Theres that phrase again. The worst riding weather socal sees is a light rain with 55 degree weather. Bikes are in generally high demand here. Just go to craigslist and troll the Ventura listings. Look at the prices of reasonable beginner bikes. Also look at the $2500 bikes which are
>does not run
>just needs a battery probably
>no title
>box of parts
>rust, rust everywhere
>>
>>34107487
>Used harleys are selling for $6k

Don't mention harleys ever again. Harleys are not real motorcycles.
>>
>>34107347
And they will keep your skin on but gloves won't prevent your hands from breaking in a crash. You definitely should be wearing gloves but buying specialized gloves isn't a priority.

If you lowside good boots are very important. They are the difference between walking away with some scrapes then riding back home on your bike or calling for a ride to the ER because your foot is crushed and you broke a dozen tiny bones.

Gloves are needed to block debris from fucking your hands up at 60 mph.

I also used to sometimes wear a jacket. Then a hornet flew into my tshirt sleeve and stung me under the armpit. I was lucky I was just riding in a neighborhood. I have always worn a jacket since.

>>
>>34107666
I'm actually interested to know the difference between work and riding boots. I've been riding in my red wings and danners for years but have been thinking about getting a pair of "real" riding boots. Recommendations?

Also, satanic trips fucking checked.
>>
>>34107444
I think this is generally good advice. However I didn't listen to it and got a new mt07 about a year and a bit ago. I commuted daily and do ubereats recently. I have not dropped my bike nor had an accident although I have come close (losing footing).

To balance this, my mate dropped his a few years ago when going over pothole.

I've been lucky and careful not to ride too wild too often. Ymmv
>>
>>34107666
Boots are a big part, hell I think every piece of equipment is. I'd be wary of textile jackets though. I did an autistic amount of research before buying my first jacket and their abrasion resistance is not great. Leather is definitely king, and if you live in a place like arizona like i do, just buy perforated/mesh panels.

The tests I read were like 600D textile lasted 2s~ on abrasion tests while 1.5mm leather lasted like 8s. Insane difference.
>>
>>34107679
thats true, but i dont want to put down 3k on a bike that can potentially break or might even cause me an accident a month later
>>
>>34103312
I like the idea of being an obnoxious dirt bike douche riding in bushland but riding a road bike would be pretty shit imo
>>
>>34107771
No recommendations, but be careful aware of buying too thick of riding boots. I did one time and could barely fit my feet between my shift lever and could not feel it go up or down at all. Completely killed the riding experience until i returned them.
>>
>>34107810
They all require shitloads of maintenance anon. If you aren't good with your hands, get good or find another hobby.
>>
>>34107810
You can always call up a mechanic for a prepurchase inspection
>>
Don't listen to the 250cc meme. 90% of your ride will be spent constantly shifting up and down through worthless nonsense gears. It might be exciting at first but after a week of riding in traffic it will drive you crazy.

250 is a track bike.
>>
