Conventions are the kinds of events where lots of relationships begin but also lots of relationships end. My advice for impressing girls at a convention is that same as it would be for impressing girls anywhere else...

1) Talk to them like they're a normal person. Do NOT commend them or otherwise make an issue of them being a girl at a nerd-her convention.

2) Show interest in things that they seem to be interested in; don't steer the conversation towards yourself or your own interests.

3) Be complementary, but don't overdo it and do NOT complement them regarding anything sexual.

It can result from a number of things. A person might cheat or see an opportunity to trade up. Or someone might get crazy jealous because someone more attractive is flirting with their S.O. and they THINK they're going to cheat.

Then there's simply the fact of the matter that, for many people, these kinds of events can be exhausting and a little stressful. Nerves get frayed, people snap and say the wrong thing, etc.
