Yes but to be truly effective you need to do this many times. With hard disks, data can be recovered even after its been overwritten many times simply due to the method of storage HDDs use.

With flash-based storage you can just zero the whole disk though and it can't be recovered. Zeroing a 32gb flash drive only takes about 15 minutes at best. It just flips all the bits to 0 on the partition.
