i think I watched a few that were a big step away from the stereotypes. Prison School was hilarious, and was drawn more realistically. No purple-haired double-H girls, or anything like that. But I'm pretty sure all of them are pretty over-dramatic.

Like anything, I am sure there are 'classics' that are, in fact, worth your time.

I watched Deathnote which I thought was okay, never tried anything else (unless you count ATLA). I do, however, have a backlog of anime from some of my friends that I am excited to check out.
My point is, I don't think its fair to count out the entire medium just yet.

No, I can't stand those. Monster is too slow paced inb4 "short attention span pleb". There is a ton of things that could be cut out or shortened and the show would improve, character development is mediocre at best (mc only suddenly changes opinion in the end, other characters have one change they go through) and the animation is sub-par. I really don't understand why people praise it so much.
