I work in admissions at one of the top 15 schools in the country.

No offense, but don't flatter yourself too much. It's considerably more complicated then "this applicant is smart enough. let them in." It's almost entirely about meeting institutional needs and filling necessary holes based on target demographics.

Also, a million kids will get in almost entirely based connections their parents have moreso than their individual ability, and Early Decision/Action academic standards tend to be slightly lower because the chances of yielding the applicant are higher.

My korean friend applied to a few ivy league schools for mathematics programs with a perfect( and I don't mean he averaged like 99% on tests, he didn't get a single question wrong and got awards and shit for it), and got rejected. It's not me calling all blacks lazy, its a legitimate issue with Ivy League schools accepting people with far lower GPAs just because they're black. In grade school I thought I was naturally smart but it turns out it was because I was shunned and devoted my time to studying. It's more a question of context. We're looking for the best given what our data about the circumstances the applicant comes from should allow us to expect. It's stupid to compare apples to oranges and it's stupid to compare kids with very different resources. If we pick Jamal over Stacy it's because he's still qualified and we need him more. If the decision was being made entirely on numbers we could fill the entirety of the incoming class with Asian kids who have perfect scores on the SAT and 4.0 gpas, or kids who are applying specifically for pre-med, or just kids from NY and CT where they have powerhouse prep schools. But we need students that want to study shit other than pre-med to keep our various departments afloat, so at some point we say we "have enough pre-meds. how do our sociology numbers look." Same rules applies to race.

Working in college admissions changed my perspective on this a lot. The complaints about affirmative action are pretty silly in comparison the blatant nepotism and privileging of wealth that goes on.

When a kid gets in predominately because of the color of their skin, they're still academically qualified. Maybe not the greatest student ever, but they can do the work and have done well given their background.

When a student gets in because mommy is CEO of a fortune 500, he can damn near have committed murder and be good to go sometimes.

My IQ is in the top .25%. If Harvard based its criteria solely on intelligence then I would get in for sure. However, seeing as Harvard is a for-profit school and its highest goal is making more money, most of the people that they accept consists of much less intelligent students who just had parents that donated millions to the school so that their kids will get accepted. Pretty much, but it's the best that can be done. They want to go to college when they're 18 and not fully developed, all we have to say whether or not they're college material is what they've done up to that point. I agree, in that I'm 30 and that it wasn't until after grad school that I finally knew what kind of person I was and what I really should have been doing with my life and what my worldview was.
