Technological advancement in the last 10 years has been more than the prior 20 to that. Computational power is incredibly improved, we've done a lot with basic gene therapy, artificial organs have come a long way, and so on and so forth. We confirmed the Higgs bosons and gravitational waves, the biggest things in physics in decades.

The recent societal changes are just the result of huge chunks of the world developing economically at an unprecedented rate. Things seem bad to us because our incomes have stagnated in the developed world. But they're stagnated at a very high level, we're just spoiled by good economic growth.

I have been studying electrical engineering for seven years now and I've passed 10 classes so far. I still have four years left until I get my degree. Fortunately college is free in my country but I'll be basically unhireable due to my record by the time I get out (if I don't give up and drop out before). I'm 24, 25 in april and I've never worked a day in my life nor do I know how to do anything people would actually pay me for.
