Today's technology has made it easy to live in the digital world. In Japan the term Hikikomori exists to describe such people. It is my belief that this kind of life style will become wide spread. Through pornography, anime, manga, we've made it easy to stay online. In the twenty first century we may truly see people that live in their computer chairs. But I'm not here to discus if that's possible, we've seen it. I'm here to discuss its potential harm. Twenty years ago the internet didn't exist. Now it controls every part of our lives. And twenty years from now I'm going to be living in a very different world. What will the children that grow up sitting on a computer chair be like? I believe they will be much like the Japanese Hikikomori. We already see how damaging to Hikikomori lifestyle is to society. But ignore the affect on society and birth rates for a moment; let's take a look at the individual's here and what happens to them. China already has a problem with computer addition. A child's quote "Reality is too fake." Is a troubling statement to me. After all, how could our boring world possibly compare to theirs? These people forsake friends for their online counter parts. Extreme anime fans spend about six hundred dollars a month on anime, manga or merchandise. Rather than question the morally bankrupt companies that exploit the emotionally damaged consumers, let's look at the consumers. The room of a Hikikomori is easily identified to the point that it's a stereotype. Trash lying on the floor. beer cans and cigarettes strung all around. Clean and dirty clothes on the floor, well cared for anime and manga stacked on every flat surface. Figures without a speck of dust on them. Anime posters covering the walls. Does that sound like a healthy individual's room? I believe that any respectable grown man shouldn't spend three hundred dollars on molded plastic. There is a difference between enjoyment and obsession. Will the computer age and anime ruin society?

I'm quite serious. Anime has made it easy to get into a unhealthy lifestyle. Nothing is wrong with a hobby. But an obsession is never healthy.

>Retirement

>>
>>32921833
People just want to enjoy their live, and for many, anime is one of the few things they can enjoy. Especially when you really can't stand being around people or being reminded too much of the world. And people don't owe anything to the world. "damage to society" my ass. People hiding at home don't harm anybody. Hell, otaku like in your pic finance anime for everybody else.

>A child's quote "Reality is too fake." Is a troubling statement to me.
Maybe the child is referring to how hypocritical the real world is. Adults tell you shit like "you can't solve problems with violence", yet all you see in the news and get from history classes is that people are full of shit and killing each other by the millions for asinine reasons. Adults made a fucking industry out of killing people. Or they tell you shit like "beauty comes from inside", "it's the inner values that count, looks don't matter". Yet all the celebrities and heroes in movies are clearly attractive by very objective standards. Leaders of the world are obvious fucking retards yet everyone acts like they're legitimately the best and to be respected. Yadda yadda yadda. Smart children understand this kind of shit, and the sensitive ones may decide they want as little to do with real people as possible.

TLDR: you're a faget
>>
>>32921833
>it's actually not a pasta

So is this stealth collection thread or is OP serious?

If serious, don't blame the merchandise. Addiction and obsession don't just open up because one likes something. They happen because person in question has a predisposition for them or is lacking fulfillment or motivation. Anime just happens to be fairly costly hobby to REALLY get into but so is drinking, smoking, vaping and etc. It also happens to be a very appealing one since there is plenty of imagination, variety and accessibility to enjoy.

tl;dr: It's not your waifu's fault you're a wreck
>>
>>32921836

There's not much in life that brings real value, the only essentials you really need are food, water, a place to live, and some cheap entertainment to amuse yourself until you die.

In some ways, this is why I have a job because when I finally come home and watch anime or read manga I feel like it brings me peace rather than just gives me something to do. When I used to be a NEET, I would be utterly bored of everything, even things I actually liked.

So in all honesty, there's not much out there to spend money on that brings any real value. Spend it however you want, whether it be on figs, anime, manga... whatever brings you joy. As long as you have necessities covered, nothing after that actually matters.

Though we're wired to seek the path of least resistance, we're often the least miserable with some challenge.

I suppose we build our cells one brick at a time.

Think about it? What other possible reason would there be for being that bad at writing a series?
>>
>>32921833
>There is a difference between enjoyment and obsession
I think this is the main point. I'd like to say that in order to become obsessed with something there must be elements in one's life other than the subject of obsession, like depression, social anxiety, loneliness and so on, but I must admit that the Internet and technology have made it easier to fall down this hole. I think in this day and age it's up to the parents to give their children a proper upbringing, which should also include encouraging them to go out and make friends instead of spending most of their time in their room.
I guess you could say the Internet is a blessing and a curse, it's much easier to get what we want, but there's also the risk of ending up swallowed by it.

One thing I don't agree with is the spending part. If you spend half of your monthly income on figures, anime and manga you have a problem, but there's nothing wrong with buying those things in moderation, though maybe that was not your point.

On a side note, this is an interesting thread but judging by the current state of /a/ it will probably get deleted.
>>

I feel like you're mixing different things together and focusing too much on the stereotypical Japanese image of hikikomori, friend.
You took a look at that picture and left with an impression of the shell, without looking at its core. Depression and self-hate, low self-esteem, inability to recover from failure that ends in a deadlock, no job opportunities for people without studies or big job gaps in the CV...
In our present society, a single misstep and you'll find yourself at even lower level conditions than those of illegal migrants.

Look at television. When that shit came out people said the exact same things. People stopped going to see movies and vaudeville shows. People eating tv dinners in front of the tv like zombies became a cultural symbol of the era.

Look at tv now. Millenials aren't buying cable packages, they aren't buying tvs. There was a, excuse the expression, paradigm shift. Now it's all youtube.

Give it time. The jews will try to monopolize the internet by ending net neutrality, nickle and diming customers with data limits and streaming services, and people will find something else to zombify their attention. It may happen in fifty years, it may happen in 100 years.
