Let's go boys, time for a stoned man's Civ Thread, hosted by yours truly: Me.

FIRST VOTE: Race.
Goal: Majority vote

Location will come after race. It makes no sense to pick the location without knowing what the fuck you are.

The Immortal-Family of the empire of planet Tash, they who conquered the world, and ruled for hundreds of years, come to a final and very mortal end.

The kings and queens of this land declared themselves the true heirs at first - They waged war for decades before the last two stood, a woman and a man who had racially and physically split the world into equally voracious halves. They themselves lasted for sixty longer years, until finally both the queen and the king had died.

Then anarchy unfolded, but quickly the many generals of their armies took over. Again, they declared themselves king and queens, after the violence had ended and their ambitions grew high.

The fates rewinded the cycle, and soon, the last two remained, until they too fell.

The world arrives at this moment of chaos - this moment for history to finally begin, or for it to end forever.

----

It was that day of monumental chaos that you were awoken. Dormant within the earth as you had yet to be disturbed from the sleep that your arrival to this land brought.

The lands around had become poisoned by the wars of two former mage-kings that had served in the last catastrophic war, leaving it a desert of strange and mystical locations and creatures affected by forced outstanding to any man.

When you awoke, leader of the Crystalline, absent of much memory besides....

>The presence of your family, genetically related, dormant inside the asteroid beneath the earth you awoke in...

The ground shakes slightly, as you compel the remaining material of the rock encasing your royal bodyguards to the surface. As it breaches the rocky sand of the wastes your form shimmers slightly with excitement, small dim lights, ranging from pinpricks to large spheres, growing and contracting with your brief moment of excitement.

The sound of cracking fills the air, and suddenly part of the rocky object housing your Guardians bursts away from its other parts. With the front of the rock sent flying, and with the dust settling, you see the grand forms of Ten Guardsmen, standing in a perfect line, awaiting your commands. You can hear the subtle communications passing from guardian to guardian as they examine their environment from every perfect angle, your species "sight" of course coming from the refraction of light anywhere through your translucent body, trading observations and information about the wastes, informing and confirming your own observations that:
- The surrounding land is harboring unstable levels of energy, likely magical, that would be harmful, or at the very least dangerous, for anyone seeking to make this land home. (Though to a crystallid, this isn't a worry)
- Life does call this place home, much of it living in the depths of the ground and in the air, but in the distance you could make out the forms of very odd looking animals, somehow adapted to the strange lands.
-
The guardians await your orders.

Without a word to your subordinates, you use communication by light, "Star Speech" as you feel compelled to call it - that you instinctually understand and speak, to order a search for a location that will allow your kind to have an advantage reproducing with such small numbers.

> Roll 1d100, first FIVE rolls will count,

0, or 5 straight wins or losses = Critical Success or Failures respectively

4:1 Wins:Losses = Major Success

It doesn't take long for frustration to set in. The magical wastes seemed to take pleasure in making the path as difficult as it could, what looked like solid rock to walk on might dissapear in an instant - some forgotten mirage or illusion, maybe trap, that nearly claimed several of you. In some places, the environment would make drastic changes, even in spans as small as circles with diameters of only a couple meters at best, to entire tropical forests nestled inbetween the wastes and other mis-matched climates.

After several long days of travel, your frustration had reached a paramount peak as the examination of another semi-hospitable rock face was again devoid of the rich, resource heavy substances you would need to expand rapidly.

Therefore in the interests of your species' continued survival, you began the exacavation of the first Hive. Quickly a bowl-like depression over 20 meters across and 5 meters deep took form, your guardians strategically placing large fragments from the stoney earth beneath the sands around the perimeter in order to stop the sand from flowing back in too early.

As completion of the depression comes to completion, a strangely pleasing symmetric order to the chaotic landscape around you filled your mind, a strange admiration for ordering the world together.

A final decision was to be made before you began the growth of your first hive - How would you go about its completion? (Note: this will have lasting effects on how future hives are grown if your society decides to branch out)

> Focus on vertical growth, high and tall structures that will extend into the skies, making them very observable but formidable structures
> Focus on lateral-growth, massive complexes hugging the Earth with some subterranean elements, but an emphasis on covering a very wide amount of area in the Hive's structure
> Focus on Subterranean growth - forsake the relatively easy to find locations on the surface to instead create a massive network of crystalline tunnels and chambers

Step by step, you approach the center of the circle, concentrating the energies inside you into a single mass located in the center or your chest, a glowing lump of crystal that slowly pushed towards the surface of your 'flesh', before growing outward and falling into your cupped hand.

Instantly you feel exhaustion feel your being with the creation of this hive - something that will take several days for you to recover from - but you manage to hold yourself upright before dropping the crystal into a hole in the dead center of the depression.

Quickly, a thick crystal shell begins to fill the bowl, covering every inch of the depression, before forming into a small, hollow hill, with one section cut away to act as an entrance and exit, in an uncharecteristic break of decorum, your Guardians file in to the inside of the structure to drag you away from the center of the bowl, as the second stage of growth begins.

The loud sound of the seed, the ultra-concentrated magical genetic material of your species that you use to birth hives, creating tendrils that dig into the Earth, branching several times before expanding into large, thick walled, hollow tubes. Quickly the vital chambers are formed,
- a 'warehouse', for simple storage of everything from food(minerals and other material) to tools
- the 'Dormancy chamber', in the cases that Crystallids need to "rest", their conception of rest meaning to recover lost energy whether physical or magical, in a dark, heavily secured chamber filled with altars and holes to lock one's self away
- The breeding colonies, a large half-sphere of chamber adjacent to the secure Dormancy Chamber, looked something akin to an organic creature's farms. Long tilled but shallow trenches cut through a soft rock-bed, with many dim lights filling the chamber with a calming blue. It is here that you will be able to begin spawning more members of your species.

Your exhaustion has not claimed you yet, what do you use the last vestiges of energy on before returing to the 'Dorm'?

> Save it, and recover faster
> Use it to grow the hive further before the initial stages end, (write-in option to decide what structure you want to grow, points for creativity)
> Use the remaining energy to start growing a few "workers", minor, mindless Crystallids that serve the hive in maintenance, caring for the reproductive cycles, repairing damage to the hive, and a variety of versatile deeds. (These will inevitably be produced in mass)
> Use the remaining energy to force the hive to send tendrils a distance away from the main hive, in order to have a security system of sorts to detect anyone approaching the hive

Your guardians, silent as ever, help carry you to the spawning grounds, letting you lean slightly on their forms as you drop small amounts of concentrated energy into the nutrient rich compounds lining the ground.

Quickly the seeds, around 10 in total, took root and grew small tendrils to help them stand upwards, while ripping nutrients from the ground. And with the last spark of consiousness before needed rest, you order your guardians to defend the complex. They lower your body into one of the alcoves of the Dorm, and your internal lights dim to a barely visible spark.

-----

In your dreams, images of death and destruction fill your mind, after-shocks of the events that happened recently in the magical wastes. Only months ago, this land supported a marginal amount of life, before whatever mystic cataclysm ripped through this area, ending most of it and leaving the land a husk of its former self.
---

Upon waking, white lights brightening, you stand back and observe a worker before you, tending to a guardian who seems to have suffered slight injury, small traces of worried red lights tinge your crystalline form, and you examine the Guardian's memory.
----
"The Leader must be protected"
"The Leader must be protected"
The lights on the Crystallid's fellow, it looked like four others, Guardians shone to eachother in their defensive patterns, repeating in Star-Speak to eachother in grand displays of a dark crimson. They approached a large winged beast, arms formed into long bladed crystals, quickly they slashed the aggressive beast to pieces as it crossed the border onto the crystal shell covering the grounds. It seems that the injured guardian only suffered a wound from ripping off a rather large chunk of crystal from his arm when striking the thick boned skull of the magic-ravaged beast.
----
You return to your own mind and continue on the path towards the Hive's entrance, rising up the grand spiral staircase that descended from the surface into the central chasm.

In the distance, upon reaching the surface, you could see several workers wrapping the large, mottled beast in layers of a special, nearly acidic mineral that devoured the relevant nutrients into the network of the Hive.

Your lights shine crimson in danger as you feel a presence materialize behind you, a crystalline woman stands behind you, now in full view of your perfect vision.

The structure of your body alters slightly as the dark scarlet makes your form more intimidating, bristling up in razor sharp spikes that could visibly shred through anything with ease. The woman simply stands there, watching intently.

With the red crimson tinging your words, you communicate to the woman "to reveal her identity" and she begins to glow in response.

It becomes quickly apparent that this is not star-speech, but something far weaker, a simple warm glow communicating the base emotion of care. Before a bell-like voice rang through your mind.

"I am Aest, your Lordship's loyal Hive." It says, the pinkish glow adding a feeling of ease to the being's words.

Geyser Cap

"How did you come to be?" You quickly signal to the woman. "I do not have memory of such a function." You explain.

"I existed always, or rather, I feel that those that have come before me in past hives have lived, silent within the flesh of the Hive, silently watching." The sing-songy voice of the woman reveals to you, "but, my worship, it seems that the energies of this place have... Given me a form to speak with." She seems to examine her own body out of curiosity, as if the thing were alien to her.

"I still sense, and feel, the Hive." She stretches her arms towards the crystalline hills formed around you, "I still am the Hive." She continues.

"If that is true, explain your purpose, list your functions" your alarmed coloration calms slightly, returning to the muted white light of your natural form, brightening to signal your speech.

"My function remains as it has been, to observe the hive, and control its workers, I ensure the organic nature of the hive is in balance, I guide its growth to your will and do whatever neccesarry to ensure my children grow and mature healthily before being sent out into the world..." The voice trails off, realizing it should give a more... Logical explanation.

It boils down to the fact that she is the simple representation of the sentient Hive, given voice by the chaotic magics of the wastes. "She" is fully aware of everything happening within the Hive and touching its surface.

You process this for a minute, silently contemplating the consequences of this strange manifestation.

It was easy to see that having a literal communication with the Hive would give a much wider ability to manage the inner-workings of its denizens without too much input from your direct command.

Your think carefully, and come to the conclusion that the entity before you should -

> Focus its efforts towards increasing the rate of resource extraction from the surrounding environment, giving your fledgling hive the materials needed for expansive growth of complex projects within the Hive

Life cauldron

By isolating the mana energy responsible for mutating and warping organic creatures it has becone possible to accelerate the effect. Organic creatures thrown into this room mutate rapidly and unpredictably. Left for too long they will inevitably become twisted masses of barely living flesh.

This massive room is composed mostly of a large multi faceted done through which the light of the stars can be refracted and magnified. For a crystallid resting on the central platform it is possible to hear the cryptic voices of the stars. Must be built above ground.

"Begin preparations for complex creation. Our goal is to become strong in this dangerous land... Aest. And we accomplish this with a careful hand with a powerful foundation." You speak telepathically, projecting the speech to your guardians and Aest alike to provide whatever morale was possible among Crystallids. They seemed hardened in resolve by the effort, which couldn't hurt.

The figure of Aest nods her agreement, and quickly melts back into the landscape beneath her, and you can almost feel the rushing of energy deep into the earth, searching deeply for everything necessary to create both strong and specialized Crystallids.

With Aest occupied and the workers busy cleaning up and improving the hive-entrance and tunnels, both you and your Ten guardians are free to search the surrounding lands.

The Guardians stand, each statue-like reproduction, standing taller than the average man but still carrying the appearance of being smaller versions of yourself. Each one has its own identity despite being completely subject to your will, a certain coloring to the 'sound' of their starspeech and the subliminal telepathy of your species.

Aest's addition, or rather revelation, that the Hive is sentient has added an extraordinary amount of info to the network of minds that you preside over - you can almost feel the insects in the ground around her crystalline shell, the feeling exhilarating as animals and other creatures get too close to the border of crystal and become food for the Crystallids, subsumed through a coffin of acidic crystal.

But... There is a disturbance to these feelings. The tunnels continue to spread deeper into the earth, Aest doing her best to find precious gem and hard metal deposits to further supplement the growth of the fledgling Crystallids. Though in certain areas that Aest felt large deposits of energy, by the time the crystal-tendrils of the Hive got close, the energy would recede before Aest could get close enough - causing a resounding frustration to pulse through your mind every few minutes.
"it" is in reference to the deposits

> Burrow directly to a deposit of energy before "it" has a chance to recede (guardians included)
> Wait for "it" to leave, and investigate the area "it" visited

I want do distil the ambient magic into warpstone and grow a Crystallid from it. I hope to get a very magically capable individual from that (but probably an individual limited to destructive magic due to the volatile nature of warpstone). We could perhaps even reduce the ambient chaotic magic around us by distilling it and infusing it into some individuals. But the thread is probably dead anyways :(

It would probably all right if someone took over if OP is dead for more than 24h? I liked OPs writing (not many writing errors, coherent expression of his thoughts, no smut - an exceptional rarity!), but perhaps there is someone reasonable around here. I have hopes there is someone as we have not yet tried to rape/seduce anything which is a stark contrast to most civ threads.

In your mind it's clear that risking any crystallid this early in the Hive's developement would be a detrimental mistake to make - so your entourage errs on the side of caution, observing the strange burst of energy getting close to the Hive, before dissapearing in a moment's notice.

Finally, you feel the energy close to you, only several meters to your side. The energy follows the usual pattern, staying still until Aest's tendrils got close, scaring it away.

Quickly, your guardians follow you in a single-file line as you carefully excavate an entrance into the small cavern where you sensed the burst of energy. The immediate sight was... Shocking to say the least. The cavern was relatively tiny compared to, say, the tunnels of the Hive, but still held an impressive amount of open space this far beneath the earth.

But that wasn't what shocked you, it was the intense growth of very large, very flourescent mushrooms. Curiosity overtakes you, and you slice off a piece of the mushroom, examining it carefully between two crystalline fingers.

The powdery matter that made up the fungus coated pretty much every surface in the cave, and seemed to carry residual energy similar to what Aest had sensed before.

You communicate with your guards to search the cavern - but ultimately their hands come up empty beyond the discovery that the fungi had suprisingly large amounts of both magical and organic energy in them, making them an excellent source of material for your hive, should you harvest or cultivate them.

But before you return to the hive and block off this tunnel, you

Study the mushrooms. We are archmage level magic users who are also really smart. We should be able to easily determine where they came from, and how best to use them. Plus if they are the result of a sentient creatures actions study won't be as offensive as harvesting.

In theme with your earlier train of thought, you quickly gather several small samples from different species of mushroom, before quickly evacuating. Your Guardians forced the roof to collapse behind you, permanently resealing the chamber - its location forever instictually buried in the mind of your Hive.

Quickly, in the interest of keeping the samples alive, you mentally yell for Aest.

The crystalline Avatar of the Hive's mind materializes from the crystal around you, melting and being reshaped as if the crystal were molten. She again wore the garb of something akin to a warrior queen of some humanoid race, battle-armor mixed with fine clothing, iron crown resting on her brow. The form confused you, as Aest's memories clearly held no recollection of her avatar being formed, just that one second she wasn't breathing, and then another she was...

You turn your attention back from yor thoughts onto Aest, silently awaiting your commands. "We need a room sealed off from the air, a vacuum, so these do not rot." Gesturing towards the mushrooms being held in the palm of your hand.

Nearly instantly, Aest dissapears, and around you, what was once a simple hall begins morphing into a large cube. The ground shifted as the rock beneath the earth was crushed by the power of Aest's growth - aided greatly in part to the powerful influx of complex organics on the surface into the Hive network. Then, even despite your own unnatural existence, you were shocked, and in some small ways horrified, as the walls seemed to shift like the skin of a beast, pulsing in and out, somehow sucking the air out of ventilation shafts that quickly enclose themselves in crystal as the room settles. All gas and foreign materials (not protected by your hand) have been sucked from the room, giving you the perfect sanitary storage for organic materials.

"Ingenious work...." You mold a table in the far corner of the room, a long slab raised from the crystal around you, and drop the fungi on its surface. You separate the slices and chunks by species, slightly delighted by the pretty lights some seemed to give off. Each species had vastly differing textures, some as soft and smooth as silk, that gave off muted tons of a deep blue and purple, others harder than the rock outside of the Hive, giving off darker shades of green and yellow. You will only be able to do several experiments before the sample is ruined, so splitting up the subject of experiments will reduce the efficiency overall, and with that in mind you decide to:
Multiple choices are allowed

> Use the experiments to test the organic properties of the mushroom, allowing your hive to efficiently consume and understand everything physical and chemical of their nature
> Attempt to reproduce the organisms, giving you more samples at the risk of potenially killing the samples you have.

Fungi inhabit a niche as a decomposer in real life. Skipping the long biology lecture if we put the samples on a dead body, log, or other source of organic material there is a very good chance they will grow on their own. As long as they aren't any type of lichen (which is a fungi and a plant) they shouldn't be able to digest us.

Lets get some agriculture started! Its always the most important thing in civs
> Examine the magical properties and composition of the fungi
We need to know how the magic around us behaves, we are in mana wastes after all, something could be dangerous about the funghi or become less dangerous because of them.
> Use the experiments to test the organic properties of the mushroom, allowing your hive to efficiently consume and understand everything physical and chemical of their nature
this sounds like a long term thing to me.
>>

Speculating it is something like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiotrophic_fungus but with chaotic mana. Perhaps it even sucks the mana into itself? This might help us fine-control the way mana around us behaves and hopefully help build a less aggressive environment for us.

You form several indents in the table, creating a liquid from the crystal within. The liquid is as clear as water, but bubbles with strange incadescent colors. First, you take one of the soft velvety pieces, with a deep blue light. The liquid swallows the pieces quickly, but keeps it suspended.

You patiently and carefully command the liquid to decompose and analyze the subject's chemical and organic properties...

The lights inside you flare in time with your concentration, intensifying as you ponder the data being fed to the Hive. The chemical compounds were highly... Erratic. Many sequences of garbage genetic code existed, reminiscient of a highly disturbed organism, you guessed by the magic seeping into the Mana Wastes, but this looked as if they had been under its influence for hundreds of years...

Your lights flash red as the piece of fungus fallas apart after that initial revelations, you assumed it would last far longer, but the sample is gone.

Minor failure 2-3 w-L

This experiment was... Rather interesting to say the least. Another small room, airtight and adjacent to the prior lab, was set up with soil samples, and corpses of creatures from the surface.

You lay some samples on the flesh, others on wet and dry soils, many with both. It was shocking how quickly it seemed that the fungus drew nutrients in, as small strands formed connecting most to their closest food source, growing quite substantially in a short amount of time. It was odd though, the lights seemed to grow brighter and the magic energies within them seemed... Stronger to your senses.

Admittedly, the growth in power in the mushrooms fascinates you, so you continue to let them grow, bringing down a a thick slab of clear crystal to separate you from the growing fungi.

At first, they seemed to grow high above the corpses, long thick stalks holding them up several centimeters before meeting to create the main stalk and cap.

If you had a sense of amusement, it was triggered by the fact that the fungi seemed to grow almost face-like structures on them resembling eyes and a mouth.

And that's when your lights flash crimson-

Their eyes opened.

The things behind the containment shield were... Unnatural to say the least. Your own personal physiology was highly dependent on regulated and supreme order, ridgid crystal through-and-through, but the fungal beasts before you were natural expressions of chaos. As they grew, tumors and growths formed and reshaped themslves dozens of times, twisted, gnarled limbs broke out of their torsos ending in stubby nubs that probably worked as fingers or claws for the clearly... Strange looking beasts. If anything brought you unease about the mushrooms, it was just how oddly they seemed to characterize animal form - two stood, one taller than yourself, one far shorter, and even a small rodent or dog-like fungal creature. All three stared at you, horrible grimaces of displeasure being shown through their jagged faces.

Your best bet in communicating with them peacefully, you assume, is to hope they have some manifestation of language - so using Aest's manifestation, you have her speak through the walls in as many common tongues as your Hive memory had access to.
