PROLOGUE

More than six millennia ago, a great civilization existed on Planet Earth. Its centre stretching from Finland to Korea, it was the representation of humanity at its peak. Poverty, disease, hunger and illiteracy existed only in the form of case studies in history textbooks; they had been conquered ages earlier. Erudite, strong and proud, it was the closest humanity had ever approached the asymptote that was and is utopia. However, its glory was not only limited to Earth.
Straddling one of the Orion Arms busiest galactic trade routes, the Finno-Korean civilization was blessed with immense wealth. Medical technologies mingled with military ones from all stretches of the galaxy, only further enriching the already wealthy Altaic ecumenopolis. Growing ever stronger, ever smarter, ever brighter, it stretched its planetbound arms to the heavens, with entire strings of Lagrangian point space colonies being built from Mercury to the furthest reaches of the Oort Cloud, far past Jupiter.
However, despite all of this, it was cursed by one limitation. It was merely an interplanetary civilization, not an interstellar one. It subsisted on trade that did not belong to it alone. It had no colonies beyond Sol’s reaches. Like Samarkand on the Silk Road, its fate was inevitably tied with whatever happened on the ends of the route.

1/?
>>
When the rest of the galactic nations that had relied on the smooth and safe Solar Hyperroad had declined, whether due to war or some other less grandiose tragedy, Earth’s decline became inevitable too. Splendorous shipments of galactic consumer goods dried up. Without these goods, the utopia that had been bought with galactic tariffs started to slowly crumble apart. Of course, its decline was not instant. Like the hitherto-hypothetical prepper who enjoyed his heartiest goods first, the decline was masked by what exuberance could be drained from the last galactic shipments left. The proud people of Earth, in denial of the unsustainability of a lifestyle bought on credit that was no longer infinite, continued on with their false dream of utopia, despite in their hearts knowing very well that it would crash and burn in tragedy. Their own experts and engineers told them that they should’ve scaled down their consumption of energy, to survive for long enough for them to develop interstellar travel, to revive that great Hyperroad. Due to corrupt politics and apathetic citizens, the cries of these scientists went through deaf ears.

And so of course, the destruction and collapse of the Great Altaic Civilization was now set in stone. Humanity could not defy its destiny.

Scientific progress and intellectual growth slammed to a stop. Hostility to new ideas became the norm. As the stockpiles ran out, the human creatures, less than ants, for ants knew how to prepare, began to squeal and shriek like rats on a sinking ship. With valuable hyperfuel gone, travel between the Inner and Outer planets screeched to a silent halt. No longer could the colonies supply the Altaic metropolis. A terrible recession fell down like a sword on the heads of the foolish Finno-Koreans.

The rich, no longer prospering, began to turn their gazes from what was outside the System back to [what was on Earth to the expense of the working and middle classes, the robot operators. Creating meaningless financial ventures and likewise meaningless stock markets, it seemed like they were eating their own money in vain. Of course, this lead to terrible inequality, that only further worsened the divide and panic. A new serfdom developed and the formerly vibrant upper class, who were very much benign in the earlier period of intergalactic trade began to turn their laviscious, hungry gazes upon the less fortunate. Such old and barbarous as the “droit du seigneur” were revived as the bored “Nobles” sought to entertain their loins with the thighs of innocent citizens, male and female, newborn and geriatric alike.

And so, under the long chain of noble abuses, the Altaic civilization exploded, killing all of the ruling class, ravishing their daughters and son in a retributive orgy of carnage and carnal violence alike.

2/?
>>
And so, with two distinct polities, rather than the one that had earlier defined human history, conflict was inevitable. The laws of history demanded it. No matter how meaningless, no matter how painful, this was the inevitable result of the decline of a formerly united civilization.

Accounts about how it started vary and whoever was the initial aggressor remains contested to this day in secret historiography, but the most common account was that a minor border incident after decades of tension in modern-day Uzbekistan flared into total war.

For millennia, the Finnish Holy Roman Khaganate and the Great Hwan Empire clashed. Entire ethnicities were destroyed. To this day, very few knew about what ideologies they fought for. What is known is that the ground that was contested contained the very last stockpiles of intergalactic trade. The purpose of power was itself, ultimately. Whatever great high-minded principles either sides chanted were practically forgotten as geostrategic realities took over.

The war continued and continued, the strongest weapons wearing out first, first exhausting the galactic-trade bought plasma and laser weapons, then the railguns, then even the solid lead machine guns and even musketry. Centuries of meaningless and exhaustive warfare brought humanity back to the era of spears and clubs.

But then, interlopers arrived. Calling themselves Messengers of Magic, they gifted, or cursed humanity with arcane skills in exchange for their souls. The two warring polities, debased and degraded by millennia of utter hatred, sought a swift conclusion to the war through decisive victory over each other.

The Hwan Empire pushed had pushed as far as Estonia, but the Finnish managed to survive this onslaught, turning the war around slowly but surely, leading to the gates of Pyongyang itself. The Finnish Khaganate activated its weaponized Pyramid Array and the Hwan Empire unleashed a new and terrible weapon, “autism”.

And indeed, they were delivered from this eternal war, as through these vicious means mutually destroyed each other, leaving behind politically and socially impaired post-apocalyptic hunter gatherer remnants. Some say the Khaganate won, others say the Hwan won. What this one humble historian here can comment on is that victory is meaningless if there is no peace to enjoy, an empty and meaningless bragging right. For example, far later, the devastation wrought by the Roman-Sassannid Wars, even as both sides claimed the sweet drug of victory, made both empires susceptible to the newly united Arab hordes, who followed a new religion connected with the Messenger of Magic, but that is for a later discussion.

3/?
>>
Yet still one thing lingers from that ancient-beyond-ancient forgotten age, those who were against the Messenger of Magic from the very start, those who were aware of the tragedy that could be caused, those who were enlightened to the potential despair that could be brought onto humanity, those who even before that, had tried in vain to persuade humanity to downscale their energy demands, so that humanity could live to thrive another day.

And just as the Great Altaic Empire was a verse of a song and those little polities calling themselves empires, from Rome to the Ottomans, were other verses of that same song, today, those that remembered the Finno-Korean Hyperwar would sing their chorus once again.

Would they fail as they had so many times before or would they be successful in reuniting humanity under one banner again, to seize what was rightfully theirs?

You fight because you must fight alongside her forever until you both perish.

Your name is Bernard Fokke and you've been "alive" for more than 300 years, if the state you are in could be called alive. In fact, you are "cursed".

A captain of the Dutch East India Company, the greatest mistake you ever made was bringing a dying girl aboard your ship.

When the young Javanese maiden died on your ship, it seemed that her soul merged with it. Unfortunately, this also had the nasty side effect of making your ship unable to be docked anywhere.

To be honest, you had owed a debt you her. She had saved your life from the less accommodating of her people, who had tried to spear you for offending them by making a religious faux pas.

Thus for around three centuries or so, you've been continuously sailing, unable to land at port.

However, this did not mean that you were unable to keep up to date with current developments. On the contrary, the Javanese maiden had been rather accommodating. Technically, you were only unable to land at a port - that never did stop others from trying to meet you, although few tried, due to their not untrue belief that you were cursed.

On one fateful day in the 19th Century, a brave Royal Navy officer, a lieutenant specifically, had the audacity to board your ship.

His ship was one propelled by coal. EnsignGordon, if you remembered his name correctly.

Quite starved of news of the outside world, you learnt from him that the United Provinces were now a kingdom. The Spaniards were in a death spiral and there were insurrections in the Germanies, now organised into a Confederation. The Queen of Britain was Victoria and the current king of the Netherlands was William II.

After a spot of tea and plenty of rum, somehow, the both of you agreed that your ship would be constantly retrofitted for eternity by the British Navy and that they would try to find a way for you to get out of your predicament, with one caveat;

That you were to serve as their permanent special agent for the rest of your service.

Quite tired of sailing meaninglessly around, you had nothing other to do and thus agreed.

This duty, after around a century, switched to the US Navy.

Currently, the Flying Dutchman (or Flying Javanesse) was equipped with a state-of-the-art new model nuclear engine. As you peer out from the bridge, the new paint job shines quite nicely.

That new satellite equipped computer meant that you didn't have to bother others with boarding you to deliver messages anymore.

But there was one thing on your mind.

Right now, was April the 30th. On May the 1st, according to your sources, a huge monster was going to destroy a city in Japan. Then, the world you knew would end, all of humanity "as it was" would be killed and something new would emerge.

Ensign Gordon apparently was no run-of-the mill Royal Navy officer. The fact was, he was the member of a secret organisation dedicating to bringing and end to the world and reviving it.

You had no particular orders really. You weren't really that involved in the end of the world. It was a quid-pro-quo sort of relationship you had between yourself and the naval officers brave enough to visit you.

[] "Might as well take a front seat to the end of the world". You won't be able to land, but you can certainly make full speed ahead to Mitakihara Bay to gaze upon the destruction.

[] "Screw that" Roam elsewhere
- [] Near Lemuria
- [] Around the South China Sea, where your source say there will be a huge naval battle
- [] The straits of Malacca, to see the horde of motorboat scum screaming like sinking rats.
- [] Off the Horn of Africa, to play around with that new railgun of yours on unsuspecting Somalis.

OK, I retract that "Dead" announcement.
If this survives Monday with signs of interest, I'll resume.

Otherwise, I will be running a completely different quest, an Isekai quest.

Good night.

Please no, I don't want to pick up more quests. What'd ya have in mind for that?
