RECAP:
You are a mech called Autobots Assemble, but more commonly known as Arcee. After befriending a mech named Moverlord when he picked you up after you got your brain hacked, the two of you went on a quest to catch the hacker. After dealing with a crazed shareware Seeker who tried to steal some presumably important info, you found out from a friendly pawnbroker that the mnemosurgeon you're after is named Craniotomy and the data you hold is information on a mnemosurgery cult's members.

The psycho hooker's brothers then engaged in aerial combat with you, and after some breakneck stunts Moverlord (with at least a little help from you, you guess) defeated them.

When you found Craniotomy's hideout, you descended alone into the dark Kaon underground. Craniotomy faced you first with a remote-controlled amalgam of the mangled bodies of the two Seekers. After a tense and ugly battle, you caught up to Craniotomy himself, where you learned the true purpose of the cult - to operate and hack brains unhindered by any sort of moral or legal boundaries, in order to push the limits of mnemosurgery. You also learned why he hacked you in particular; when he tried to steal the data, you chopped off his hand, rendering him useless as a surgeon. Finally, you learned you were working for a group called the Iaconian Protection Force, to take down this cult.

Seeing how down and out Craniotomy was prompted you to adopt him and keep him around in case he proves useful. The three of you journeyed to Iacon, where after a tussle at the Business Directory you found out that the IPF isn't as up-and-up as it seems. On the hunt for more information, you encountered Goggles, a mech who works for an equally illegal artillery and weapon company. With some help from him and his boss, you found your way to the IPF, where you found out you had been fired with ignominy. Your boss offered to let you come back if you handed over Crany for execution. You refused and made a run for it, during which Crany got shot. You split your pursuers up and led them away from Moverlord and Crany so they could get to an underground clinic. After you got healed up, you found your companions with the help of the doctor. After a heart-to-heart with Crany, the three of you split from Iacon to make your own way in the world and also get your brain fixed.

You are now broke, crashing at Moverlord's place, and deciding what to do next.

Alright, so we go to Hot Wings guy for a few jobs until we can get my brain in order. Then we'll have a better idea of what we can do.

After some discussion in which you and Crany collab your abilities, you decide to head back to Kaon for a while and ask the Hot Wings pawnbroker for work. If anyone knows where to get a job, it's that guy.

Moverlord gives you two a ride to Kaon, but he's going to be hanging out back at the ranch until you need his help, since he already underwent his personal revelation. He's glad it was less disruptive to his life than yours were to your life so far.

On the way, you ask Crany about how he managed to hack the hooker Seeker's brain if he only had one hand. Crany replies that he only put an intense but simple directive of "get the data stick" into his brain, and let the Seeker's natural cunning and skills do the hard work. That's why the charade broke down at the end - the directive was overriding the whole "act like a person" thing that people normally do. Oops, he shrugs.

As you process this information, you come up on the storefront of Hot Wings.

You talk to the pawnbroker and he says he has a couple things lined up in his files, people looking for help here and there.

Your choices are:
A machine shop - more of an assembly line job and less of the intricate work you were hoping for, but the pay is all right.
A security firm - no worries, this is just a job guarding some data and crap. No murdering anyone unless they try stealing shit.
A secretary job - lots of intricacy and perfectionism required, but you'll be up to your eyes in busywork, although while seated in a comfy office.

Which to choose?

(I am so damn sorry that was the second night in a row I split. Tonight and the foreseeable future are good, though.)

It may be busywork, but a comfy office sounds nice after all the shit we went through

You tell Hot Wings guy you two will take the secretary jobs. Great, he says, good choice. You'll need to show up at the Boring and Refusing Company in Lower East Kaon.

You ask is that supposed to be some kind of joke.

He says they contract jobs of digging holes and also sell replacement explosives for such activities.

Oh.
>>
>>114828
Hey, that doesn't sound like it could possibly lead to a dangerous situation at all

Let's go do our surely uneventful work

The application says show up at sunrise sharp for first day orientation, where you'll get a tour around the R&D labs and the customer service center and be shown your desk, where you will be taking care of the boss' schedule as well as the managers', and handling overflow from the two-mech call center. Upon accepting the job, this is now your first day and you're extremely late. The two of you beat feet to the Lower East side, where you wander lost and confused before finding your way to your new Boring and Refusing Jobs.

Upon arriving, the customer service manager immediately screams at you for not handling his schedule, and now he's late to a meeting with some very important customers. The former secretary was just fired, apparently, and gives you unhelpful non-info on how to deal with everything as he packs up his crap. A call center dude wants to know if the gossip about those two from HR is true, and some guy from R&D wants Crany to come hold something that needs to be on a stand, as R&D is fresh out of stands because they blew them all up. You strongly suspect your desks used to be one single desk. The customer service manager comes back out of his meeting yelling for energon.

Crany wonders if you should have brought a box of donuts.
>>
>>115012
Well, don't have to be doing this too long, just enough to get a bit of money together. Until then, I guess we're gonna have to deal with these guys

Just keep thinking about how you're not being shot at, that easily makes this a step up

You can do this. 8 shanix a workshift for each of you. You're beginning to appreciate how much cash that wing brought in.

CS manager throws a stapler at you? It's not a bullet. Gossipmonger wants to know this and that, but hey, you feign amnesia and he moves on grumpily. Nobody bites your face. Nobody is a raised-from-the-pit amalgamation of corpses trying to kill you. The chairs are comfortable. The R&D department has blast-proof doors. Sometimes people bring snacks. It's been a nice life, although one filled with paperwork and office drama. Compared to your old job and life, though? Golden.

Crany's having a more annoying time of it than you, though. Other call center dude has been making hand jokes at him for the past few days. Non-fucking-stop. He must be pretty HANDy with that phone line, but is he sure he can HANDle it? Crany's a pretty HANDs-on worker, he must be an old HAND at this. But he must be pretty desperate to take this job, he's gotta be living HAND-to-mouth and getting HANDouts on the side. Although he's a pretty HANDsome mech, would he mind giving him a HANDj-

It's a good thing the fire alarm bell rings right when Crany punches him.

>Have to leave the room with the blast-proof doors

Don't think I don't know where this is going, keep an eye out for if this really is a fire or if someone tripped the alarm on purpose

As far as you can see, there's no smoke or flame in sight, but you don't know what's going on in R&D. Seems Crany has made an enemy of the call center dude, because Crany's punch left a small dent in the guy while the returning punch left Crany crashing into his half desk and breaking it in half again. It's a good thing the guy stomped off after that instead of continuing the fight.

You pull your dazed fellow secretary to his feet and start grabbing datapads. Your boss made it very clear to you that any safety procedures in Kaon are voluntary on the part of the company, and your ass is expected to save everything you can if an emergency occurs, to show your gratitude that there was an alarm at all. You're fairly sure this shit wouldn't fly in Iacon, but then again.

There's a throng of mechs carrying equipment and datapads out the door, but you still don't see any -

Oh. There.

There's smoke falling from all the ceiling grates now. You close your vents and wave the smoke away from your eyes, and Crany does the same. It doesn't feel too hot yet, but people are motioning others toward the exit. Seems like a good idea to follow orders for now.

After you make it through the exit hall and outside, the lobby and entrance explode.

Indeed it ain't.

You grab Crany's wrists by reaching over your own shoulders and vault him forward while transforming and leaping, so he hits your roof and bounces off again midair, as you hit ground and burn rubber around the corner to catch him again when he does a sick spin and comes back down. He lands on your roof and you transform once more to toss him upward. He does a flip and sticks the landing.

Somebody says they should hire more secretaries like you guys.

You check around your coworkers. You don't see anyone you don't recognize so far. There's the CS manager and a few of the R&D guys, all carrying pieces of some project that was lined up for review next. "Hand" jackass was ogling your sick moves and pretending he wasn't interested. People are piling up their crap and sitting around coughing smoke out of their vents. You ask some people what happened, and don't get any responses deeper than "shit blew up". If someone set this bomb up on purpose, they're not revealing themselves too easily.

>>121101
A few wounded people are lying in the rubble, moaning and groaning. You see people missing limbs and a lot of bodily fluids. Someone in the crowd is calling the hospital for emergency transport. A coworker tries to pull someone out from under a slab by the legs. Turns out it was just legs.

You make it past the lobby, pulling the less damaged to their feet as you go, and open the door to reveal a completely intact, if slightly smoky, office.

Someone behind you yells what the FUCK.

Okay, what the HELL.

You rush into the office, followed by Crany and a bunch of your other coworkers. Yelling and shouting commences. Everything looks in order, nothing is falling from the ceiling, and nothing is, as far as you can tell, missing. Apart from the stuff everyone carried out.

Somebody opens the blast doors to the R&D labs and everything looks fine in there too. None of the explosives were set off or stolen.

Once everyone moves their crap back into the office and the injured are taken to the hospital, a great search begins for whatever corporate espionage has happened. The thing is, nobody can find a single file missing, copied, or moved near the time of the explosion. The managers are going out of their minds trying to figure out why this happened.

Crany pulls down one of the ceiling grates and the remains of a smoke bomb fall out.
