I have THE solution for 4chan's cost problem as mentioned here:
>>706294
>4chan can't afford infrastructure costs, network fee, servers cost, CDN and etc, now.
>4chan have three options.
>Halve the traffic cost
>limit uploading image sizes

The solution:
Ban all image formats, and only allow webp and webm.

.webp files are a tiny fraction of the size of even a low quality jpeg

/g/ can make a conversion tool for images to webp (like they did for webms to replace gif, as found here: gitgud.io/nixx/WebMConverter)

Make a sticky thread on all boards, with instructions and links to the webp converter.
Make sure the converter works on windows, linux and OSX so that no one is alienated. (later perhaps for android and ios too)

in summary:
>/g/ makes image to webp converter (must include batch converting option, later perhaps a screenshot tool)
>all boards get sticky thread with link to converter and instructions
>all images (jpeg, png, gif) are banned
>the only allowed formats are: webm + webp

This makes running 4chan EXTREMELY cheap.

VP9 should be enabled and advertized openly versus VP8. VP9 encoded videos should approximately be 1.5 - 2 times smaller.

Excellent idea. Still, it depends how much is just filesize draining money.

I also disagree with banning ALL other formats. Advertise the shit out of converting and make this the new standard, but otherwise have limits for other formats. A 4KB JPG is just as good as any other 4KB image.

The BPG decoding library uses a modified version of FFmpeg released under the LGPL version 2.1 as HEVC decoder. The BPG decoding library excluding the FFmpeg code is released under the BSD license.
The BPG encoder as a whole is released under the GPL version 2 license. The BPG encoder sources excluding x265 are released under the BSD license. The x265 library is released under the GPL version 2 license. The optional JCTVC HEVC reference encoder is released under the BSD license.

I did, and it said this
>Some of the HEVC algorithms may be protected by patents in some countries (read the FFmpeg Patent Mini-FAQ for more information). Most devices already include or will include hardware HEVC support, so we suggest to use it if patents are an issue.

BPG is literally just “HEVC the image format”, and is covered by shittons of HEVC patents by known patent troll MPEG.

The whole reason people are using VP9 and now developing AV1 instead of using HEVC is because of the stupid high licensing costs you need to use these patented algorithms. 4chan would get sued out the ass within seconds by the MPEG-LA.

Forget it. It's a dead format, because of patents.

This is not even a decision. The answer is always the same: CPU cycles are FAR, FAR, FAR, FAR, FAR, FAR, FAR cheaper than bandwidth.

If you can spend 1 minute recompressing an image to save 20% bandwidth on 1,000,000 requests, you have made it worth your money.

Why don't we just keep JPG and PNG but before uploading, the site compresses it with a compression tool like tinyjpg or compressjpg? When the compression is done it just uploads it
or users can help doing it manually
It will obviously not be as fast but the file sizes will be smaller and you get the same quality instead of changing to another file format like WebP.

Pic related.
The original file was 11-6 megabytes and now its 2.6 megabytes compressed.

New image formats won't solve the problem.

Everyone said webm would help save on bandwidth because all the gifs that got converted would be smaller... now people make 4 MB webms instead.

We should convert to new formats, it'll be good in the long run, but we also need to lower file size caps.
>>

>gifv

>>
>>718348
gifv is not a format. they just append the ".gifv" to the address and host only .mp4 or .webm.

Go to their "r/HighQualityGifs" board and try saving one of the files. It'll be either webm or mp4.

This anon gets it. More efficient formats have *always* simply led to higher quality. It was the same for CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays etc. and it will be the same for 4chan images.

If you want to reduce file sizes, lower the file size limit. Simple as that. Making people use third party hosting for large images works more than fine. I already do this on a regular basis myself, using websites that support transient direct-link hosting like 0x0.st

How about making some boards completely text-only? I mean, think about it.

Example: if you made /b/ text-only, you would get rid of trap threads, furry threads, loli threads, r34 and fuckton of other cancerous threads that are there 24/7, sometimes even more of them at the same time. By that you would also get rid of people going to /b/ only to visit those threads and people going to /b/ only to make those threads. So you would decrease the traffic significantly. You would also get rid of tons of underage people, because text-only mode would make it less attractive for them. And /b/ would perhaps get more creative, because it's not Random anymore, it's Porn General, and if cut out the porn, you would end with different content, hopefully more interesting. And written porn.

I know 4chan is IMAGEboard, but I still think it would be pretty good chemo, at least for boards like /b/.

We could switch to webp right now! The JS library for coding and decoding already exists.

Cutting the cost of file uploads is only part of the story. While webp would be a pretty good dent in file sizes we also have to look for ways to convince users to buy passes.

Unfortunately there isn't a lot that users want that they'd be willing to pay for. Maybe webms with sound. Also some boards could go back to being text only boards.
>>
>>720757
i agree with your statement that it there should be a client side solution

but sadly 4chan hasnt seen any platform improvements for years and the only thing that changed was changing the settings of banned file formats to allow webm/vp8 which runs on the clients browser so all they have been doing for years is db version updates/changes and config "hacking" 0 tech improvements or stuff that would really change anything

There's already reduced time between posts as an incentive, as well as being able to bypass IP range bans. /g/ already blocks a significant portion of the T-Mobile IP range, presumably due to abuse from people using phones on mobile data. I suggest banning all IPs from mobile providers and allowing those who buy a pass to post using mobile data as an incentive.

/t/ should stay. People use it a lot actually but mostly lurk to make sure a good quality thread isn't bumped out and removed. And it doesn't take too much bandwidth since it's slow and people almost never spam images there.
/r9k/, /soc/, /trash/, /x/ and /s4s/ should merge, or get deleted and /b/ maximum number of thread pages doubled. They're all shitposting boards anyway.
Agreed on /o/ and /n/ merging and /asp/ and /sp/ merging.
Delete /mlp/ and let them post /mlp/ content on cartoon boards and /b/. The show isn't as popular anymore and only newfags and retards haven't left the board. Unless I'm mistaken, since I remember seeing that shit everywhere and now it suddenly disappeared.
We should also merge the porn boards into a single adult board, and another adult cartoons board for 2D porn.
Although merging boards won't really help that much, porn and shitposting boards probably would make a small difference.

That's true for JPG but not WebP

For WebP, the -lossless option will actually be fully lossless (rather than -near_lossless, which is like JPG at constant quantization)

The only difference is basically whether or not you skip the YCbCr conversion step. YCbCr is better for compression but the conversion between YCbCr and RGB can introduce off-by-ones in some pixels.

if you ban those, then you grearly reduce the load that board creates while still allowing it to be used for what it was meant to be

there's zero reason to remove /hr/ when you can do that instead
>>
>>716054
Hey whatever works for the image boards.

As long as /f/ stays the same I'm fine with it.
>>
>>721867
I bet the normies use most of the bandwidth posting their paypay libraries.
>>
>>721905
How widely is it supported online?

Does imgur accept it? Does the wikia network? Will most fourms allow it to be embeded? Does google catch it with google images?

New format + file size limit is the best option. It will probably cut down used bandwidth by half.
/hr/ should be deleted as well. It doesn't contribute to anything other than wasting data.
>>
>>716054
This seems like a very reasonable solution.
I hope it gets implemented.
Although converting all my picture to webp might be a bit of a pain in the ass.
>>
>>721935
Support is dependent on browser, not individual websites. As long as your browser supports it you can post and view it. Any modern browser like chrome, firefox, and even edge will work. All it takes is for sites that implement filetype restrictions to allow it.
>>
>>721969
>Although converting all my picture to webp might be a bit of a pain in the ass.
drop them all on a batch converter, go get coffee, and you're done
>>
What about other solutions like extended security/anonymous features like stripping exif data on uploads and https?

Also, how about capping the amount of data existing on boards at a given instant? I see /wsg/ as an extended courtesy to users and I think it's reasonable to assume that most people browsing 4chan at work do not have enough down time to browse an entire board's worth of images.
>>
>>721867
That's great and all but it doesn't affect the bandwidth problem

Reduce file sizes first, to solve the immediate problem without much cause for debate. And then feel free to add a new format later to increase quality, once you feel the format is ready.
>>
>>721859
1. visit /g/
2. post big sized jpeg
3. wait for autistic savior of 4chan to convert your image to webm
4. tell him that webm is shit
5. get long explanation of their merits
6. ????
7. profit!
>>
>>722052
Stripping exif data and https add near zero weight on 4chan.
>>
>>721935
Let me test

>Does imgur accept it?
Yes
>Does the wikia network?
Can't test (need account)
>Will most fourms allow it to be embeded?
Forums usually just insert dumb <img> links, so yes
>Does google catch it with google images?
Yes
>>
>>722171
I meant selling them as features included with the 4chan pass
>>
>>721972
Websites like imgur and wikia very much care about the type of file you upload
>>
Honestly doubling the post timer right now would make wonders, would force people to rethink a bit about their shitposts with their paypay memes.
>>
>>722225
I meant that there's no server-side changes other than allowing files in that format to be uploaded and stored
>>
>>722003
[code]
for x in *.png; do cwebp -lossless "$x" -o "${x/.png/.webp}"; done

I'd bet 500$ these formats don't work on Apple or probably chrome/windows

/g/'s autistic GNU/NEETs get heavily triggered by things that aren't open sores
>>
>>722052
>Also, how about capping the amount of data existing on boards at a given instant?
Storage != Bandwidth
>>
>>722270
They work on anything that's not safari because apple can't into standards. At least on a mac you can install a real browser, but ios cucks will stay cucked for their poor decisions.
>>
>>722259
Websites like imgur and wikia very much need to reprocess your images
>>
>>722270
Why wouldn't it work on Chrome? Google is the one funding these formats.
>>
Delete /soc/
The point of 4chan is to be anonymous, not show your face, your dick and go meet up with other people.
>>
>>721363
The issue is with connection security. Java is historically horrible with it, and simply enabling it anywhere is a risk.
>>
>>722304
You're right. They probably need to extract metadata from the uploaded images.

Webp is used by default on mobile Chrome so it's definitely supported by Chrom*. I think only Firefox and Safari don't natively support it.

This has to be a bait, right?
>>
>>722334
But JavaScript isn't Java

>>722353
Firefox also supports it. There was a time when they opposed it but now Mozilla actually has investments in WebM and WebP due to its high efficiency.
>>
>>722341
They need to generate thumbnails
>>
>>722415
Firefox's only argument against WebM/WebP was always that “if we deviate from the status quo, we will just fracture the user base!”

Then chrome did it anyway and basically stole firefox's market share. Now firefox is the only major browser that doesn't support it, so the climate is completely different. Their agenda of preserving browser compatibility now compels them to implement webp instead of not implementing it.

I'd hope you could change it so posts would be shown in chronological order and not grouped like that. That shit is cancer, just like the catalog.

why the fuck?
there is always Weppy

but this starts adding too many scripts then

works on opera, palemoon(variant of firefox) and chrome/chromium, on windows, linux and osx.

Works on android natively, and on ios with some apps (but not the browser)

so unless you use an iphone or internet explorer, you're find.
>>
I said it before webm support was added and I'll say it again: add apng support.

The REAL cancer is the fact that your filters aren't applied to the catalog

I filter about 80% of /g/. The catalog is unusable.

works in qutebrowser and other qtwebkit-based browsers too

also works on firefox if you're using system libjpeg instead of their bundled crap

sorry, brain fart. That was for arithmetic coded jpg, not webp

Love this idea.
And ban .gif for gods sake. Webms have already successfully outclassed them in every known way.

Wrong, webp has alpha-channel transparency. It also permits lossless encoding, so you can display pixel art properly.

I wish I could make irfanview open all imageformats in linux easily.
>>
>>716767
>>723983
I attempted to made a test image that achieves the same effect with an ICC profile instead of a gAMA chunk, feel free to test your browser's support https://0x0.st/1eI.webp

The only browser I have with ICC profile support is palemoon and it doesn't support webp, so I can't test it myself, sadly.
>>
>>724012
You're using the wrong tools for the job. For making webps look no further than cwebp, which is the reference encoder.

It has a `-lossless` option, and also many options related to alpha. (e.g. letting you use lossless mode for alpha and lossy for the image, or letting you pick a different quality setting for the alpha, and so on)

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
