Anyone have 4chan.org redirect to one of those bullshit flash update sites every so often? Happened a few times this week (out of the near 100 times i type 4chan.org in url bar and hit enter)

Next time it happens i'll screenshot and post URL. Normally i'd 100% think this is on my end, but it happened on two seperate machines. One running windows 7 and the other OS X. Only happened once or twice on the windows machine.

This only seems to happen with 4chan's address. I'm pretty anal about what processes are running, don't download bullshit plugins, monitor launch daemons/agents ect.

The javascript on home page is below.

I don't think this code can't redirect to any pages as long as I know.
I'm not familiar with recent javascript though.
>>
>>363834
>sc.src = (location.protocol == "https:" ? "https:" : "http:") + "//ecpmrocks.com\/js\/show_ads_epmads.js?pubId=14031";
It injects its own javascript, it can redirect if they let it redirect. It can hijack website cookies if they want it to hijack website cookies.

Let's google your ad service.
https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=ecpmrocks
All the results are viruses. Get a better service.
>>
>>363834
>>363855
To clarify, an ad service injecting javascript isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's a bad thing if they don't properly vet their ads or are otherwise untrustworthy, which ecpmrocks does not. Google ad services before you use them.

>>
>>364027
The sudden spike in reported redirects over the last week isn't explained by several a bunch of people suddenly starting to mistype 4chan. It's explained by using a ad server that is known to serve redirect viruses.
>>
>>364036
It varies from service to service and plan to plan. You can choose to only accept static images, which is completely safe. But you get less money. If you choose to do more complex ones, they'll commonly inject javascript, which can redirect the browser. It's the ad network's responsibility to make sure malicious ads don't get on it.

>>363912 seems to be still seeing redirects unless that was made before you changed it.

In any case, if they sell ads to crooks like pic related, can they be trusted? I wouldn't trust them.
>>
>>364148
Wait, when did the front page have ads?

I thought only the boards had them.
>>
>>363834
>var sc = document.createElement("script");
Creates a HTML's script tag.
>sc.type = "text/javascript";
>sc.async = true;
Sets an asynchronous connection with the external script and defines the type of script as text/javascript (not really needed nowadays)
>sc.src = (location.protocol == "https:" ? "https:" : "http:") + "//ecpmrocks.com\/js\/show_ads_epmads.js?pubId=14031";
This is the problem. The script sets its source to 'http://ecpmrocks.com/js/show_ads_epmads.js?pubId=14031'. You can see that the script tries to read/set HTML5's localStorage cookies. This is very dangerous.
>s.parentNode.insertBefore(sc, s);
And finally, inserts the script tag in the page.

If the ad server lets customers put arbitrary HTML in the frame, a bad actor can easily redirect to their own page. They don't even need to run Javascript on 4chan itself, just on their own page.

Here's a little example:
http://b.1339.cf/cbozwyv.html

This is why you need to restrict ads to images and text only, or if that's not possible on epom, find another ad server.
>>
Has anyone actually fallen for these? They look like noticeably more convincing scams than I've seen in the past, but I can't believe that gullible people come on 4chan really. If you find yourself redirected to another site, don't you automatically look at the URL bar to see where you are? And when you see it's not where you wanted to go, don't you think, "Shit, le anonymous hackers on steroids might delete my system32"?

>>364336
If we don't keep bumping this thread, there will be more threads created about the same thing, which is bad for /qa/. Perhaps this thread should be a sticky or something if you're that worried.

OP here
You may want to switch back to whatever epom branch you were previously using. Since the switch the problem has gotten a lot worse, for me at least. Most people have adblock and only notice it on their phones so it won't be a massive deal yet. But people will start complaining soon.

IIRC, it would make it so your machine would spam 4chan to get more people to do it. Might have had other botnet features, but I dunno.

Something as simple as a redirect would definitely catch people if the above caught anyone.

my boss fell for one of these last week. it installed some flavor of the week virus / malware on her pc. the hilarious part is that I used to handle tech support for the company before being pushed up the ladder into management earlier this year. back when I handled such things, I would have figured out how to fix her pc. Now we have an outside service perform the same work for nearly my previous salary, and they recommended that she buy a new computer, I kid you not. It's not my problem any more so who am I to say otherwise?

Ad Situation Guide

1. Information

>What is happening?
Our admin is testing new ad services on the homepage and related pages. Some users reported redirects to malicious websites.

>Facts
- The ads in question were served from hxxp://ecpmrocks.c0m, which allows injecting its own Javascript and is able to redirect and hijack browsers. The script tries to read HTML5 localstorage cookies. The official ad host is Epom Market LTD.
- Ads on the boards are served by hxxp://zkcdn.n€t, which only serves images.

>Unconfirmed rumors
- ECPM may be a legit ad hosting service. However, a simple Google search leads to questionable results, since hackers can inject and distribute malicious scripts.
- Board ads may be infected. But since the distributor is not injecting scripts, it should be harmless.
- Infected downloads.

>Current Situation
hiroyuki changed ad servers. As of now, the frontpage serves ads from hxxp://bnhtml.c0m. Said ads are still running scripts.

2. Prevention/Security

>Browsers/Extensions
- For enhanced security, it is generally recommended to use a browser that supports extensions. Examples include: Firefox, Chrome.

>Competent ad/script blocking extensions:
- uBlock Origin: https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock#installation
An ad blocker that uses a simple point-and-click firewall. You can decide what gets blocked or what goes through. https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/wiki/Dynamic-filtering:-quick-guide
You may want to whitelist the following: @@||4chan.org @@||4cdn.org
- uMatrix: https://github.com/gorhill/uMatrix#umatrix
A matrix filter. Block scripts, frames and more. https://github.com/gorhill/uMatrix/wiki
- NoScript, ScriptSafe: Scriptblockers.

>Software
You should always use anti-virus software.
If you are infected: Look for tools like MalwarebytesAntiMalware. Ask for help on malware support forums.

I've never had this.
But I've had a warning from 4chanX, advising to turn on AdBlock on 4chan.
Actually I have adblock disabled on boards.4chan.org, and enabled on 4chan.org.
I use Chrome.

Just saying one can support 4chan without having malware.
4chanX pops a warning that links here.

I'd miss the ads of loli ass with tan lines...

>>
>>371326
>In the long run, it could be very good for the quality of 4chan.
This is what I've been trying to say in previous threads. By having an entry barrier of "oh no malicious ads!" we're guaranteed to scrape off some of the newfag infestation.
The only problem I have with the ads would be if the entire site gets in trouble because of it, but with what 4chan has been through previously, I think malicious ads are very lightweight.

Where are the servers located / who runs them nowadays actually?
>>
>>371645
>By having an entry barrier of "oh no malicious ads!" we're guaranteed to scrape off some of the newfag infestation.
It might encourage the edgy 'hackers on steroids' types though who think the malware warning is only there because of how shocking and dangerous the things/users on the site are

I don't know if you didn't even bother reading the thread or are just shitposting, these will automatically redirect you from 4chan.org main page to a malware site

What?

So what, is 4chan hosting malware ads just an accepted thing now? This thread is three weeks old and Hiro/the mods haven't done anything about it? What a joke.

moot wouldn't have let this happen.

Imageboards and textboards always were slow. It was the sacrifice you made for quality and anonymity. Only three sites broke that general trend. 2ch, the textboard Hiroyuki used that was the largest forum in the world, Futaba Channel, and 4chan. And now 8ch depending on the board you use and they only popped up because mods and moot got in a huff over people discussing things they didn't like. Aside from those most of them always were slower. If anything it's slowly crashing back to the way it used to be. Bad for newfags with ADHD who need a constant stream of posts to be entertained, and a non-issue to anyone with an attention span longer than that of a gnat's dick.

It's called SQL and has existed since before day one.

This can't work. You need allow-popups to enable links with target=_blank
And you might also need allow-top-navigation.
>>
>>388514
first of all:

>if the current browsing context's active document's active sandboxing flag set has the sandboxed auxiliary navigation browsing context flag set.
> Typically, there is no chosen browsing context.
> The user agent may offer to create a new top-level browsing context or reuse an existing top-level browsing context. If the user picks one of those options, then the designated browsing context must be the chosen one (the browsing context's name isn't set to the given browsing context name). The default behaviour (if the user agent doesn't offer the option to the user, or if the user declines to allow a browsing context to be used) must be that there must not be a chosen browsing context.

I.e. it does not necessarily block opening of the link, it may just be handled like a popup.

Secondly, target=_blank is cancer, there's middle-click for that.

Third: allow-top-navigation certainly is not needed, in fact, that's what's going to prevent the tab hijacking that OP is complaining about.

>let's disable the actual ad link because target=_blank is "cancer"
ok kiddo
>>
>>388555
my point is that ads shouldn't use that, let the user decide whether something opens in a new or the same tab.

anyway, allow-popups may be acceptable, even if undesirable. it's about not setting allow-top-navigation and the other cruft that prevents most issues.
>>
>>388561
I'm not even sure allow-top-navigation is of any use here. The iframe is hosted on another domain. Can it even reach the outer dom.
>>
>>388568
yeah, setting window.top.location = "http://foo.bar" is one of the few things exempt from the same-origin policy.

also, right now there is no iframe at all, it's just javascript that includes javascript from a 3rd party domain. 3rd party javascript code can do anything with the page. hence the proposal to wrap that javascript in a sandboxed iframe.

>is one of the few things exempt from the same-origin policy.
I don't think this is true anymore. It doesn't seem to work in firefox.

And the ad on the frontpage has an iframe for me.
The JS ad tag inserts another script (invoke.js), which then inserts an iframe.

>The JS ad tag inserts another script (invoke.js)

that JS already comes from the ad network, thus it has to be considered as untrusted and yet runs in the 4chan.org context. that's the whole problem.

If the ads behave "nicely" then yes they will just embed an iframe. The whole issue is when they don't.
